Can Muslim men wear red clothes?

Yes, most scholars say Muslim men can wear red clothes. The Prophet ﷺ was seen wearing a red outfit. Some scholars dislike plain bright red for men, especially in the Hanafi and Hanbali schools, so red with stripes or patterns is the most widely accepted.
The Prophet ﷺ in red
Al-Bara ibn Azib described the Prophet ﷺ and said he saw him wearing a red suit of clothes (hullah), and never saw anyone more handsome than him (Sahih al-Bukhari 3551). This is the main evidence that red is allowed for men.
Why some scholars are cautious
Abdullah ibn Amr wore two garments dyed with safflower (usfur), a bright orange-red dye. The Prophet ﷺ told him these were clothes of the disbelievers and not to wear them (Sahih Muslim 2077). This led to different views:
- Shafi'i and many Maliki scholars: red is allowed for men; the prohibition is about safflower-dyed clothes specifically.
- Hanafi scholars: plain, bright red is disliked for men; red mixed with other colours is fine.
- Hanbali scholars: plain red is disliked; striped red is fine.
Ibn al-Qayyim and others explained that the Prophet's ﷺ red hullah was a Yemeni cloth with red stripes, not solid red. So a striped or checked red shirt, a red football kit or a red jumper with other colours is fine by everyone.
White is the favourite
The Prophet ﷺ said: "Wear white clothes, for they are among your best clothes, and shroud your dead in them" (Jami' at-Tirmidhi 994). White is especially nice for Friday and the mosque, but it's recommended, not required. Green, black and other colours are also narrated.
What matters more than colour
For men, the main clothing rules are covering the navel to the knees, avoiding silk and gold, not imitating women and not dressing to show off. A red shirt that meets these is fine. Avoid red items tied to another religion's festival, though; see Can I wear a Christmas sweater as a Muslim?
