It depends on where the rips are. Ripped jeans aren't haram in themselves, but a man's awrah (the area from the navel to the knees) must stay covered. Small rips below the knee are generally fine; rips that show the thighs or above are not, especially in prayer.

The awrah rule for men

According to the majority of scholars, a man must cover from his navel to his knees in front of others. Some Maliki and Hanbali scholars call the thigh a "lighter" awrah, but covering it is the widely followed position, so jeans with big holes around the thighs leave the awrah showing. That's the main issue, not denim or fashion as such. The Quran describes clothing as a gift with two purposes:

يَـٰبَنِىٓ ءَادَمَ قَدْ أَنزَلْنَا عَلَيْكُمْ لِبَاسًا يُوَٰرِى سَوْءَٰتِكُمْ وَرِيشًا ۖ وَلِبَاسُ ٱلتَّقْوَىٰ ذَٰلِكَ خَيْرٌ "O children of Adam, We have bestowed upon you clothing to conceal your private parts and as adornment. But the clothing of righteousness – that is best." Quran 7:26

What about rips at the knee or below?

Scholars differ on whether the knee itself is awrah: Hanafis include it, while many others count it as the boundary. To be safe, avoid big tears right at the knee. A distressed look on the shins or small frayed patches that don't show skin above the knee are usually fine for everyday wear.

Is the style itself a problem?

Some scholars dislike ripped jeans for other reasons: paying extra for clothes that look damaged, or following a trend for its own sake. Others see it as a neutral fashion that isn't tied to any religion. Either way, Islam likes neatness. The Prophet ﷺ said, "Allah is beautiful and loves beauty" (Sahih Muslim 91). If your jeans look sloppy, that's worth a thought, but it's not a sin to wear a style you like.

Praying in ripped jeans

  • Your prayer is only valid if the awrah is covered, so thigh rips are a real problem in salah.
  • Rips below the knee don't affect your prayer.
  • Tight jeans that stretch when you bow can also show skin through tears; check before you pray.

Key points
  • Ripped jeans aren't haram in themselves.
  • A man's awrah is from the navel to the knees.
  • Rips showing the thighs are not allowed in public or prayer.
  • Small rips below the knee are generally fine.
Tip: If you love a pair with thigh rips, you don't have to throw them away. Wear a pair of thin leggings or long shorts underneath in a matching colour, or iron-on patches from the inside. You keep the look and stay covered.
