Can Muslim men wear silk pyjamas or shirts?
No, real silk shirts and pyjamas are forbidden for Muslim men, even at home or in bed. Satin and "silky" fabrics made from polyester or similar fibers are fine, and there are exceptions for genuine medical need. Women can wear silk freely.
Silk is forbidden for men's clothing
The Prophet ﷺ said, "Whoever wears silk in this world shall not wear it in the Hereafter" (Sahih al-Bukhari 5834). The ruling is about wearing real silk, so it covers shirts, pyjamas, robes and scarves, whether you wear them in public or only at home. Once a silk gown was given to the Prophet ﷺ. He wore it and prayed in it, then took it off sharply and said it did not suit the God-fearing (Sahih Muslim 2075). See Can Muslim men wear silk ties?
Satin, blends and "art silk"
- Satin: a weave, not a fiber. It can be made of silk or of polyester. Polyester satin pyjamas are fine.
- Art silk, rayon, viscose, modal and cupro: plant-based or synthetic fibers, not real silk, so they are allowed.
- Blends: many scholars judge a blend by which fiber is greater. Mostly cotton or polyester is fine, mostly silk is not.
- Trims: Umar reported that the Prophet ﷺ allowed silk only to the extent of two, three or four fingers, which scholars apply to borders and trims (Sahih Muslim 2069).
Look for "100% silk", "mulberry silk", "habotai", "dupioni" or "tussah" on the label. Those are real silk. If the label does not say, the price is a clue, since silk costs far more than polyester satin.
The medical exception
Anas reported that the Prophet ﷺ allowed Abdur-Rahman ibn Awf and Az-Zubair to wear silk shirts because they had a skin disease that caused itching (Sahih al-Bukhari 2919). Scholars allow silk for men only for a genuine medical need like this, not for comfort or luxury. If a doctor says a particular fabric is needed for your skin, ask a trusted imam about your situation.
What to do with silk you already own
If you own silk clothes from before you became Muslim, you do not need to feel guilty. Simply stop wearing them. You can give them to your wife, mother, sister or daughters, since silk is allowed for women, or sell them and buy something permitted. See Can Muslim women wear silk?
