No, most scholars say Muslim men shouldn't wear ties made of real silk. Natural silk is forbidden for men as clothing, and a tie is mostly silk. Ties made of polyester, "satin" fabrics, cotton, wool or linen are fine, even if they look shiny.

Why silk is off-limits for men

The Prophet ﷺ said that gold and silk are permitted for the women of his ummah and forbidden for its men (Sunan an-Nasa'i 5148). Scholars of all four schools agree that wearing real silk clothing is not allowed for men, while women can wear it freely.

Silk is described as one of the rewards of Paradise:

وَلِبَاسُهُمْ فِيهَا حَرِيرٌ "...and their garments therein will be silk." Quran 22:23

So men give it up in this life, and it waits for them in the next.

Isn't a tie too small to matter?

There is an exception for small amounts. Umar ibn al-Khattab reported that the Prophet ﷺ forbade silk except the width of two, three or four fingers (Sahih Muslim 2069). Scholars apply this to silk trims, borders and stripes.

A tie, though, is usually a whole piece of silk, not a trim, so most scholars say it's not covered by the exception. A few contemporary scholars are more lenient because a tie is narrow, but the safer and more common view is to avoid real silk ties.

What counts as silk?

  • Not allowed (majority): 100% silk or mostly-silk ties, bow ties, shirts and pocket squares.
  • Fine: polyester, microfibre, cotton, wool, linen and knit ties.
  • "Satin" or "silky": these describe a weave or finish, not the fibre. Check the label.
  • Blends: many scholars allow fabric where silk is the smaller part.

At work and formal events

Good polyester and wool ties look professional, and nobody at work will notice the difference. For weddings and Eid, you can still dress smart; see What should I wear on Eid as a Muslim? The same rule covers gold accessories like cufflinks or tie clips; see Can Muslim men wear gold rings?

Key points
  • Real silk clothing is forbidden for men, allowed for women.
  • Small silk trims up to four fingers wide are allowed.
  • Most scholars say a full silk tie isn't allowed.
  • Polyester, wool, cotton and linen ties are fine.
Tip: If you already own silk ties, give them to a female relative (silk is fine for women) or sell them, and use the money for a few good polyester or wool ones. Always check the care label when buying.
