Yes, Muslim men can wear silver rings. The Prophet ﷺ himself wore a silver ring, so it's not only allowed but follows his example. Keep it modest in size, and wear it on the little finger or ring finger rather than the index or middle finger.

The Prophet's ﷺ silver ring

Ibn Umar reported that the Prophet ﷺ once had a gold ring made, then threw it away and said he would never wear it, and afterwards he had a silver ring made (Sahih al-Bukhari 5866). He used it as a seal for his letters to kings, engraved with "Muhammad Rasul Allah". So the silver ring replaced the gold one, and men have worn silver rings ever since.

Adornment in itself isn't something Islam frowns on:

قُلْ مَنْ حَرَّمَ زِينَةَ ٱللَّهِ ٱلَّتِىٓ أَخْرَجَ لِعِبَادِهِۦ وَٱلطَّيِّبَـٰتِ مِنَ ٱلرِّزْقِ "Say, 'Who has forbidden the adornment of Allah which He has produced for His servants and the good things of provision?'" Quran 7:32

Which finger and which hand?

  • Fingers: Ali said the Prophet ﷺ forbade him from wearing a ring on this finger or this one, pointing to the middle finger and the one next to it (Sahih Muslim 2078). Most scholars say the little finger is best; the ring finger is also commonly used.
  • Hand: narrations mention both the right and the left hand, so either is fine.
  • Stones: a silver ring with a stone like agate, onyx or a gem is allowed.

How big can it be?

Scholars recommend a plain, modest ring, like the Prophet's ﷺ. Some, especially in the Hanafi school, limit men to one silver ring of moderate weight, while others allow more than one. A heavy, flashy ring is best avoided, since showing off is disliked whatever the metal.

Gold, silver and other metals

Gold rings are forbidden for men, including wedding bands; see Can Muslim men wear gold rings? Silver is the sunnah choice. Titanium, steel, tungsten and platinum are allowed by most scholars, though a few prefer men to stick to silver only. White gold is still gold. If you want a ring with an inscription, take care with Quran verses; see Can I wear jewelry with Quran verses on it?

Key points
  • Silver rings are allowed and sunnah for men.
  • The Prophet ﷺ swapped his gold ring for a silver one.
  • Wear it on the little or ring finger, not the index or middle.
  • Keep it modest; gold stays forbidden.
Tip: A plain silver band makes a great men's wedding ring if your spouse wants matching rings. Take it off before using the toilet if it has Allah's name engraved on it.
