Yes, Muslim men can wear tank tops in many everyday situations. A man's shoulders and arms are not part of his awrah, so a vest at the gym, on a hot day or at home isn't haram. But in prayer you should cover your shoulders, and in public modesty and context still matter.

A man's awrah

For men, the majority of scholars say the awrah is from the navel to the knees. The chest, arms and shoulders aren't included, so a tank top doesn't break the basic rule. That's why scholars allow men to wear sleeveless tops for sports, manual work or hot weather. Still, Islam asks both men and women to be modest, not just to meet the minimum:

قُل لِّلْمُؤْمِنِينَ يَغُضُّوا۟ مِنْ أَبْصَـٰرِهِمْ وَيَحْفَظُوا۟ فُرُوجَهُمْ "Tell the believing men to reduce some of their vision and guard their private parts." Quran 24:30

Tank tops in prayer

Prayer is different. The Prophet ﷺ said, "None of you should pray in a single garment with nothing of it over his shoulders" (Sahih al-Bukhari 359). Scholars differ on how strict this is:

  • Majority (Hanafi, Maliki, Shafi'i): covering the shoulders in prayer is strongly recommended; a prayer in a tank top is valid but disliked.
  • Hanbali: covering at least one shoulder is required in obligatory prayers, so a sleeveless top could affect the prayer's validity.

Either way, the easy answer is to throw on a T-shirt or hoodie before you pray. The Quran also tells us to "take your adornment at every masjid" (Quran 7:31), so dress a little better for salah, especially at the mosque. See What should I wear to the mosque?

Public settings and good sense

  • Gym and sports: generally fine, as long as your shorts cover the knees. See Can I still wear shorts to the gym as a Muslim?
  • Very low-cut "stringer" vests: these show most of the chest and are designed to show off. Many scholars see this as against the spirit of modesty.
  • Work, mosque, family visits: a T-shirt or shirt is more respectful.
  • Showing off: wearing tight vests to attract attention is the issue, not the vest itself.

At home alone, wear whatever is comfortable. For more on covering during prayer at home, see What do I have to cover when praying at home alone?

Key points
  • A man's shoulders and arms aren't awrah.
  • Tank tops are fine for gym, work and hot weather.
  • Cover your shoulders in prayer; Hanbalis say it's required.
  • Avoid revealing vests worn to attract attention.
Tip: Keep a light T-shirt in your gym bag. When prayer time comes, you can slip it over your vest in seconds and pray anywhere without worrying about your shoulders.
