Can Muslim women do gymnastics?

Yes. Gymnastics is a healthy, permitted sport for Muslim women and girls. The questions are about practical details: the leotard, who's watching, male coaches spotting you, and photos or videos. With modest kit, women-only sessions or a female coach, many Muslim girls and women train happily.

Exercise is good for you

Islam encourages looking after your body. The Prophet ﷺ told a companion who was overdoing worship, "Your body has a right over you" (Sahih al-Bukhari 5199). Gymnastics builds strength, flexibility and confidence, which are all things to be thankful for.

What to wear

The classic leotard leaves the legs and often the arms bare, which doesn't fit hijab standards in front of men. Options:

  • Full-length unitard: a long-sleeved, full-leg version of the leotard. Gymnastics rules allow full-body suits in competition, and some Olympic gymnasts have worn them by choice.
  • Leggings and a long-sleeved leotard, with shorts or a short skirt over the top if you like.
  • A sports hijab that's tucked in and pinned securely for flips. See How do I wear hijab for sports?

In a women-only session with no men present, most scholars allow lighter clothing, covering at least from the navel to the knee. See Can I take off my hijab at a women-only gym?

Coaches and spotting

Spotting means a coach holds or catches you while you learn a skill, so there's physical contact. Many scholars say a male coach shouldn't touch a woman who isn't his family, except in real need, such as preventing a fall. Ask for a female coach where possible, or ask whether skills can be taught with mats, harnesses and verbal cues. Most clubs try to help, especially if you explain early. Martial arts clubs face the same question. See Can Muslim women do martial arts?

Competitions, photos and girls' clubs

  • Audiences and filming: competitions are often livestreamed. Wear your modest kit there, or choose closed events.
  • Young girls: before puberty the clothing rules are relaxed, so many parents start girls in ordinary club kit and move to full coverage as they grow older.
  • School PE: schools in the UK and US usually accept modest alternatives. See What if my school PE uniform isn't modest?
Key points
  • Gymnastics is allowed for Muslim women and girls.
  • Full-length unitards are accepted in competition.
  • Prefer female coaches for spotting where possible.
  • Women-only sessions allow lighter kit.
Tip: Ask the club whether they run a girls-only or women-only session. If they don't, a few families asking together is often enough to get one started.
