Yes, Muslim women can go to university. Islam encourages both men and women to seek knowledge, and Muslim history is full of female scholars and teachers. Today millions of Muslim women study law, medicine, engineering and more while keeping their faith.

Knowledge is for women too

The Prophet ﷺ said, "Seeking knowledge is an obligation upon every Muslim" (Sunan Ibn Majah 224; graded sahih by al-Albani), and scholars agree this includes women. The women of Madinah once told the Prophet ﷺ that the men were taking all his time, and asked for a day to be taught. He gave them a day, met them and taught them (Sahih al-Bukhari 101). His wife Aisha became one of the greatest scholars of her time, and many men learned hadith from her.

The Quran even teaches a short dua for more learning:

وَقُل رَّبِّ زِدْنِى عِلْمًا "...And say, 'My Lord, increase me in knowledge.'" Quran 20:114

Women in Muslim history

Fatima al-Fihri founded al-Qarawiyyin in Fez, Morocco, in the 9th century, which is often described as the oldest continuously operating university in the world. Many medieval hadith experts and jurists were women, and male scholars listed their female teachers with pride. So the idea that Islam keeps women away from education doesn't match the history. Keeping your faith on campus

  • Modesty and manners apply to everyone at university, men and women alike.
  • Avoid seclusion with unrelated men and keep study groups professional.
  • Choose your housing carefully. Women-only floors or halls are often available. See Can I live in mixed student housing as a Muslim?
  • Find support in the Islamic society or a nearby mosque.

What about course choice?

Almost any useful, lawful subject is fine. Many communities especially need Muslim women as doctors, nurses, midwives, counselors and teachers, so female patients and students can be served by women. Some families also discuss living away from home, where scholars differ on the details. For subject choices, see Can I choose any major as a Muslim?
