Yes, Muslim women can run in public. Islam doesn't forbid women from jogging, running in parks or joining races. The main conditions are modest, loose clothing with hijab, and being sensible about safety and mixing, just as with any other public activity.

The Prophet ﷺ raced his wife

Aisha said that she raced the Prophet ﷺ on foot during a journey and won. Years later, after she had put on weight, they raced again and he won, and he laughed and said, "This is for that" (Sunan Abi Dawud 2578). This lovely story shows that a woman running was nothing shameful in the Prophet's ﷺ home. Women Companions also walked to the mosque, the market and the battlefield to treat the wounded.

Modesty is the key condition

The Quran asks believing women to dress modestly in public:

وَقُل لِّلْمُؤْمِنَـٰتِ يَغْضُضْنَ مِنْ أَبْصَـٰرِهِنَّ وَيَحْفَظْنَ فُرُوجَهُنَّ وَلَا يُبْدِينَ زِينَتَهُنَّ إِلَّا مَا ظَهَرَ مِنْهَا "And tell the believing women to reduce [some] of their vision and guard their private parts and not expose their adornment except that which [necessarily] appears thereof..." Quran 24:31

For running, that usually means a loose, longer top that covers the hips, loose running trousers or a running skirt over leggings, and a sports hijab that stays put. Many sportswear brands now make modest running kits. See How do I wear hijab for sports? and Can Muslim women wear trousers?

Where scholars add caution

Some scholars prefer women to exercise in private or women-only spaces, especially for intense activities where the body's shape shows more. Others say there's no problem in public as long as clothing is modest and the woman isn't drawing attention to herself. Both views are held in good faith, so choose what you're comfortable with. Running with a sister, on women-only trails, or at quieter times can be a good middle ground.

Practical safety tips

  • Pick well-lit, busy routes, especially early in the morning or after dark.
  • Run with a friend or a women's running club. Many cities have Muslim or women-only running groups.
  • Plan around prayer times and know where you can pray on longer runs.
  • Ignore harassment and report it if needed. You have every right to be there.
