Can Muslim women wear bright colors?

Yes. Islam doesn't require women to wear black or dark colors. Pink, yellow, green, florals and patterns are all allowed. Scholars advise avoiding outfits whose main purpose is to grab attention, and some prefer more muted outer garments, but color itself isn't forbidden.
No required color
Black abayas are a cultural tradition in parts of the Gulf, not a religious rule. Across the Muslim world, from West Africa to Malaysia, women wear vivid colors and prints with full hijab. The Quran asks, "Who has forbidden the adornment of Allah which He has produced for His servants and the good [lawful] things of provision?" (Quran 7:32) See Do I have to wear an abaya as a Muslim woman?
The Prophet's approval
Umm Khalid, a young girl, was given a black garment decorated with embroidery. The Prophet ﷺ dressed her in it himself and, looking at the colorful patterns, said "Sana!" meaning "beautiful" (Sahih al-Bukhari 5845). He appreciated beautiful clothing. He also said that Allah is beautiful and loves beauty (Sahih Muslim 91).
Attention-grabbing clothes
The concern isn't color but purpose. The Prophet ﷺ warned against wearing a "garment of fame," meaning clothes worn to stand out and be noticed (Sunan Abi Dawud 4029). And the Quran warns against tabarruj, a showy display of beauty (Quran 33:33). So:
- A bright yellow hijab in a city where everyone wears color: fine.
- A neon, glittering outfit designed to make heads turn: worth rethinking.
When the hijab verse came down, the women of Madinah wore dark outer garments, "as if they had crows over their heads" (Sunan Abi Dawud 4101). Some scholars therefore recommend darker or muted colors for outer layers. Most consider it a preference, not an obligation. See Can Muslim women wear high heels?
Your choice
Pick colors that make you feel good and that fit your setting. In many Western cities, a soft-colored hijab draws less attention than a black one. See Can hijab be stylish and fashionable?
