No, not perfume meant to be smelled by men. The Prophet ﷺ warned very strongly against a woman wearing perfume so that men passing by notice her scent. But smelling clean, using deodorant, and lightly scented soap or lotion are fine. At home and among women, wear any perfume you like.

The hadith

The Prophet ﷺ said that a woman who puts on perfume and passes by people so that they can smell her fragrance is an adulteress (Sunan an-Nasa'i 5126; also Sunan Abi Dawud 4173). The language is deliberately strong. The point is that scent, like adornment, can be a way of attracting men's attention. He also said that a woman going to the night prayer at the mosque should not wear perfume that night (Sahih Muslim 443).

What's allowed

Islam loves cleanliness, so the goal isn't to smell bad. Scholars distinguish between:

  • Allowed: deodorant, unscented or lightly scented soap, shampoo, lotion, and laundry detergent; smelling fresh and clean.
  • Not allowed in public: perfume, body mist or strong scented oils applied so that people around you notice your scent.

A simple test: if someone standing next to you or walking past would notice a fragrance, it's too strong for public.

At home and among women

  • Wear any perfume you like for your husband. It's encouraged.
  • At women-only gatherings and events, perfume is fine.
  • At home with mahram relatives, normal light perfume is fine.

Going to the mosque

The mosque hadith is especially clear: skip perfume when going to the mosque, where men pray nearby. Arrive clean and fresh instead. Men are encouraged to wear perfume for Friday prayer, so this is one of the areas where the rules differ for men and women.

Key points
  • Perfume to be smelled by men is forbidden.
  • Deodorant and light scented products are fine.
  • Wear any perfume at home and among women.
  • Skip perfume when going to the mosque.
Tip: Switch to unscented or very light deodorant for work and errands, and keep your favorite perfume for home, your husband and women's gatherings.
