Can Muslim women wear silk?

Yes, Muslim women can wear silk. Pure silk is forbidden for men but allowed for women, according to clear hadith and the agreement of the four schools. Silk hijabs, dresses and scarves are fine, as long as the outfit is still modest.
The hadith on silk
The Prophet ﷺ took silk in his right hand and gold in his left, then said, "These two are forbidden for the males of my ummah" (Sunan Abi Dawud 4057). In another narration he said that wearing silk and gold is unlawful for the men of his ummah and lawful for its women (Jami' at-Tirmidhi 1720). Scholars of all four schools, Hanafi, Maliki, Shafi'i and Hanbali, agree on this: women may wear pure silk, and men may not, apart from small exceptions such as narrow trims or a medical need. Why the difference?
Islam allows women more adornment than men. Silk and gold are traditional luxuries, and scholars explain that men are asked to avoid them to stay away from softness and showing off, while women may enjoy them, especially for their husbands and at women's gatherings. It's a test of obedience for men and a gift for women. Silk also appears among the rewards of Paradise for believers:
Modesty still applies
Being silk doesn't change the basic rules of dress. In front of non-mahram men, a silk outfit should still:
- Be loose rather than clinging, which thin silk often does.
- Not be see-through. Layer it or choose heavier silk.
- Not be flashy to the point of drawing attention to yourself.

Silk hijabs and practical tips
Pure silk hijabs are elegant but slippery. Many women wear an underscarf beneath them, or choose silk blends, modal or satin-finish fabrics for a similar look. Faux silk and satin made from polyester aren't real silk, so they're allowed for men and women alike. Clothes you wear, silk included, carry no zakat, but gold jewellery may.
