Can Muslims become firefighters?

Yes. Firefighting is a deeply rewarding job in Islam. You save lives, protect homes and help people on their worst days. The practical questions are about the beard, hijab and prayer on shift, and there are workable answers for each.
Saving lives is a huge deed
Few jobs match one of the most famous lines in the Quran so closely:
The Prophet ﷺ also took fire safety seriously. When a house in Medina burned down with its people inside, he said fire is an enemy and told people to put it out before sleeping (Sahih al-Bukhari 6294). Pulling someone from a burning building, cutting a driver out of a crash or teaching fire safety at a school is work any Muslim can be proud of.
The beard and breathing apparatus
This is the hardest issue. Breathing apparatus masks need a tight seal, and many fire services in the USA, UK and Europe require firefighters who wear them to be clean-shaven where the mask touches the face.
- Scholarly views: most of the four schools treat keeping the beard as required, while some Shafi'i scholars regard shaving as disliked rather than forbidden.
- Necessity: some contemporary scholars allow shaving or trimming for a genuine safety requirement in a life-saving job, while others say to look for roles or employers without the rule.
- Options: ask whether a short trimmed beard, a different mask, or a non-breathing-apparatus role is possible.

Hijab under the helmet
Muslim women do serve as firefighters. A fire-resistant hood already covers the head and neck under the helmet, and some services have approved flame-resistant hijabs for station wear. Ask the service about uniform options early in recruitment. See What if my employer bans the hijab?
Prayer on shift
Prayer has fixed times (Quran 4:103), but fire stations have quiet periods too. Pray when you can between calls. If an emergency runs through a whole prayer time, some scholars (notably Hanbalis) allow combining for a real need, and scholars agree you make up a prayer you couldn't pray in time while saving lives. Fasting in Ramadan during physically demanding shifts is a common question: if fasting puts your safety at real risk, speak to a scholar about your options. See Can I combine prayers because of my class schedule?
- Saving lives is one of the greatest deeds in Islam.
- Mask-seal shaving rules are a real issue; scholars differ on the exemption.
- Hijab can usually be worn under the hood and helmet.
- Pray between calls and combine when an emergency truly prevents it.
