Yes, Muslims can become vets, and caring for animals is a deeply rewarded job in Islam. Handling dogs is fine with some simple cleanliness habits, and procedures like putting a suffering animal to sleep are allowed by most scholars when done to end pain.

Kindness to animals is worship

The Prophet ﷺ told of a man who found a dog panting from thirst. He climbed down a well, filled his shoe with water and gave it a drink, and Allah forgave him. The Companions asked if there was reward for helping animals, and he ﷺ said: "There is a reward for serving any living being" (Sahih al-Bukhari 2363). He also told of a woman punished for locking up a cat without food or water (Sahih al-Bukhari 3482). The Quran reminds us that animals have their own place in creation:

وَمَا مِن دَآبَّةٍ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ وَلَا طَـٰٓئِرٍ يَطِيرُ بِجَنَاحَيْهِ إِلَّآ أُمَمٌ أَمْثَالُكُم "And there is no creature on the earth or bird that flies with its wings except that they are communities like you." Quran 6:38

A vet spends every day easing animal suffering. That's a very Islamic way to earn a living.

What about touching dogs?

Touching a dry dog doesn't make you impure. Most scholars say only a dog's saliva needs special washing: the Prophet ﷺ said a vessel licked by a dog should be washed seven times, the first with earth (Sahih Muslim 279). The Maliki school considers dogs pure altogether. In practice, vets already wear gloves, wash hands constantly and change scrubs, so this is easy to manage. Before you pray, check that any saliva has been washed off your skin and clothes. See Does touching a dog break my wudu?

Euthanasia, pigs and surgery

  • Putting animals to sleep: most scholars allow ending the life of an animal that is suffering with no hope of recovery, done gently and humanely. The Prophet ﷺ said Allah has prescribed excellence in everything, including how an animal is killed (Sahih Muslim 1955).
  • Treating pigs: treating a pig's illness or injury is allowed. Eating pork is what's forbidden, not caring for the animal.
  • Neutering: scholars differ. Many allow it today when it prevents greater harm such as strays and disease; others discourage it.

Training and dissection

Vet school involves dissection and animal handling. Studying anatomy to heal animals is a valid purpose, and respecting the specimens matters. See Can I do dissection in biology class as a Muslim?
