Yes, in most cases. Juneteenth marks the end of slavery in the United States. It's a civic and historical day, not a religious one, and its message of freedom and human dignity fits well with Islamic values. Muslims are welcome to join community events, as long as the food, drinks and activities stay within their limits.

What Juneteenth is

On 19 June 1865, Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced that all enslaved people were free. This was about two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation of 1863, because news and enforcement had not reached Texas earlier. Black communities began marking the day, and in 2021 Juneteenth became a US federal holiday. It's a day of remembrance, reflection and community pride, not a religious festival.

Why it fits Islamic values

Islam encourages freeing people from bondage. The Quran describes the "challenging path" of righteousness like this:

وَمَآ أَدْرَىٰكَ مَا ٱلْعَقَبَةُ فَكُّ رَقَبَةٍ "And what will make you realize what [attempting] the challenging path is? It is to free a slave." Quran 90:12-13

The Prophet ﷺ said that Allah would be against a person who sells a free person into slavery and eats the price (Sahih al-Bukhari 2227). Abu Bakr freed Bilal, a formerly enslaved Companion, and Umar used to say, "Abu Bakr is our chief, and he manumitted our chief," meaning Bilal (Sahih al-Bukhari 3754). The Quran also teaches the equal worth of every human being: "the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous among you" (Quran 49:13). Historians also record that some of the Africans who were enslaved in the Americas were Muslims, which gives the day a personal connection for many Muslim families, especially African American Muslims.

Joining an event

Juneteenth events often include parades, cookouts, music, readings, history talks and family gatherings. A few things to think about:

  • Food: barbecues may include pork ribs or sausages. Ask what's on the grill, or bring a halal dish to share. Red drinks and red desserts are a common tradition, and they're usually easy to enjoy.
  • Alcohol: some events have it. Stick to the food and soft drinks.
  • Music and dancing: follow the view you trust. See Can I still listen to music after becoming Muslim?
  • Talks and exhibitions: these are usually the most meaningful parts and raise no concerns.

If a neighbor or coworker invites you, saying yes is a kind gesture. For a similar civic holiday, see Can Muslims celebrate the Fourth of July?

Ways to honor the day

  • Read about the history, including the stories of Muslims among the enslaved.
  • Support a local community center, museum or charity that serves Black communities.
  • Visit a neighbor or invite them for a meal.
  • Make a dua for justice, healing and equality for everyone.
