Can Muslims have a gender reveal party?

It depends, but a simple family gender reveal is generally okay. There's no specific ruling on it, so it falls under the general rule for customs: allowed unless something in it is wrong. The main concerns are extravagance, mixed parties that cross boundaries, and any sense that one gender is a disappointment.

Customs are allowed by default

Gender reveal parties are a recent trend, mostly from the US. They aren't a religious festival and aren't tied to another faith, so most scholars treat them like other modern customs: permissible unless they include something haram. Sharing happy news with family is natural, and many Muslim families now do a small reveal at home with cake, balloons or a box of colored confetti. Celebrations like birthdays raise similar questions. See Can I celebrate my birthday after becoming Muslim?

Some scholars are more cautious and say Muslims should avoid adopting every new Western custom, especially when it turns into a fixed ritual. That's a valid view, and families who skip it lose nothing.

Boy or girl, both are gifts

The heart of a reveal should be gratitude, whatever the color. The Quran reminds us that children of either gender are Allah's gift:

يَهَبُ لِمَن يَشَآءُ إِنَـٰثًا وَيَهَبُ لِمَن يَشَآءُ ٱلذُّكُورَ "He gives to whom He wills female [children], and He gives to whom He wills males." Quran 42:49

The next verse adds that He gives some people both and leaves others childless (Quran 42:50). The Quran also criticizes people whose faces darkened with grief at news of a daughter (Quran 16:58). So avoid "team boy vs team girl" jokes, visible disappointment, or games that treat one result as losing.

What to watch out for

  • Extravagance: the Quran says "eat and drink, but be not excessive" (Quran 7:31). Huge parties, expensive stunts and smoke cannons go against that spirit, and some reveals have caused fires and injuries.
  • Mixed gatherings: keep normal modesty in place. Separate spaces or an all-women gathering work well. See Can I take off my hijab at an all-women party?
  • Music and photos: the usual rules apply. Think before posting the video. See Can I post photos of my kids on social media as a Muslim?
  • Certainty: scans can be wrong, so keep the mood "we're happy either way."

The Islamic birth celebration

Islam already has a beautiful way to celebrate a baby: the aqiqah, a sacrifice after the birth whose meat is shared with family and the poor. The Prophet ﷺ said, "'Aqiqa is to be offered for a (newly born) boy" (Sahih al-Bukhari 5472), and other narrations include girls too. If you want one big party, many families save it for the aqiqah and keep the reveal small.

Key points
  • There's no specific ruling; a small reveal is generally allowed.
  • Both boys and girls are gifts from Allah; avoid "losing" games.
  • Avoid extravagance, risky stunts and mixed-gathering problems.
  • The aqiqah is the Sunnah way to celebrate a birth.
Tip: When the color is revealed, say "Alhamdulillah" out loud together. It sets the tone for the whole family: grateful first, excited second.
