Can Muslims own guns in the US?

It depends, but generally yes. Islam allows self-defense and hunting, so owning a firearm legally isn't haram in itself. What matters is that you follow every federal, state and local law, store it safely, and never use it to threaten or harm anyone without a lawful reason.
What Islam says about weapons
The Prophet ﷺ and his Companions owned weapons, and Islam recognizes the right to protect yourself, your family and your property. The Prophet ﷺ said that whoever is killed while protecting his property is a martyr (Sahih al-Bukhari 2480). Hunting for food is also allowed. So a weapon is a tool: its ruling depends on how it's used. Owning one isn't required, though. Many Muslims choose not to, and that's equally fine.
Follow the law fully
Gun laws in the US vary a lot from state to state, covering permits, background checks, carry rules and what you can own. A Muslim gun owner should follow all of them, because keeping the law is part of keeping your agreement with the country you live in. See Do I have to follow the laws of my country as a Muslim? Laws in the UK and most of Europe are much stricter, so the same question there usually means hunting or sport shooting with a licence.
Safety and responsibility
Islam treats causing harm, even by carelessness, as serious. The Prophet ﷺ forbade even pointing a weapon at a fellow Muslim, warning that Satan may tempt the person to strike (Sahih al-Bukhari 7072).
- Store it safely: locked, unloaded, out of reach of children.
- Get trained: take a safety course and practice responsibly.
- Never brandish: don't use a gun to scare, threaten or settle an argument.
- Use force only as a last resort: self-defense must stay within what the law allows.
Hunting rules
If you hunt for food, say "Bismillah" (tasmiyah) when you fire, just as the Quran tells hunters to mention Allah's name over what their trained animals catch:
The Prophet ﷺ distinguished game killed by a sharp, piercing edge (halal) from game beaten to death by a blunt blow (not halal) (Sahih al-Bukhari 5475). Most contemporary scholars apply this to bullets that pierce the animal, while some are more cautious. If the animal is still alive when you reach it, slaughter it properly. Always hold the right state hunting licence. See How is halal meat slaughtered?
- Owning a firearm legally isn't haram in itself.
- Follow every law that applies where you live.
- Safe storage and training are part of your responsibility.
- For hunting, say Bismillah and follow halal game rules.
