Can Muslims play sports in a mosque?

It depends on where in the mosque. Light, respectful activity was allowed in the Prophet's ﷺ mosque, but ball games in the prayer hall are generally disliked because they disturb worshippers and treat the space casually. A mosque gym, sports hall or courtyard is a different matter: many Western mosques have one exactly for this.
What happened in the Prophet's ﷺ mosque
Aisha described how the Prophet ﷺ stood at the door of her room and screened her while she watched some Abyssinians playing with their spears in the mosque (Sahih al-Bukhari 454). Scholars explain this was a display of martial skill, a kind of training, and other narrations place it on a day of Eid. It shows the mosque was a lively community space, not a silent museum.
Why the prayer hall needs respect
The prayer area itself is set apart for worship:
When someone announced a lost animal in the mosque, the Prophet ﷺ said mosques were not built for that (Sahih Muslim 568). Scholars use this to say the prayer hall should be kept for prayer, Quran and learning. So in the main hall:
- No football, basketball or loud ball games, especially near prayer times.
- Nothing that could damage the carpet, walls or Quran shelves.
- No shouting or running through people who are praying.
Small children playing quietly is a different case; the Prophet ﷺ was gentle with children in the mosque. See Can I bring my kids to the mosque?
Mosque gyms and sports halls are fine
Many mosques in the UK, Europe and the USA have a separate hall, basement gym or car park used for youth football, martial arts or table tennis. These areas usually aren't designated as the prayer space, so sports there are allowed, and they're a great way to bring young Muslims and converts together. Islam encourages strength and fitness. See Which sports did the Prophet Muhammad encourage?
Good manners when you play
- Stop for the adhan and join the prayer.
- Dress modestly; a mosque is not the place for short shorts.
- Clean up afterwards and put equipment back.
- Follow the committee's rules and booking times.
- Martial skill displays happened in the Prophet's ﷺ mosque.
- Ball games in the main prayer hall are generally disliked.
- Mosque gyms, halls and courtyards are fine for sport.
- Pause for the adhan and leave the space clean.
