It depends on the group. Capoeira is a Brazilian martial art that mixes acrobatics, fighting techniques and music. The movement is allowed in principle, but many classes include instruments, singing in a circle and sometimes religious references or mixed partner play. Many Muslims practise it by choosing a group carefully and opting out of what doesn't suit them.

What capoeira is

Capoeira was developed by enslaved Africans in Brazil. Its movements look like a dance, with kicks, spins and handstands, but it is a martial art played in a circle called the roda. Players move in pairs while others clap and sing, and instruments such as the berimbau (a string instrument with a gourd) and drums set the rhythm. The result is part sport, part music and part community.

The movement and play-fighting

Playful skill displays have a precedent. On a day of Eid, a group of men were playing with shields and spears, and the Prophet ﷺ let Aisha watch while he encouraged them, saying "Carry on! O Bani Arfida" (Sahih al-Bukhari 950). The kicks and acrobatics are not a problem on their own, as long as there is no real aggression and no unnecessary harm.

In most roda games, kicks and sweeps are meant to be dodged rather than landed, so the play is about control, balance and timing. That makes it gentler than many other martial arts. See Can Muslims do boxing or MMA?

The music and the singing

Music is central to the roda, and this is where Muslims differ. Many scholars say instruments and music are not permissible, while a minority allow decent music without bad lyrics. Many scholars also allow a simple hand drum on joyful occasions such as weddings and Eid. Your choices include:

  • Join a group that plays the roda with minimal instruments or one that you're comfortable with.
  • Join training classes without a roda, as many gyms teach the movement only.
  • Practise the acrobatic parts and fitness drills at home or with a friend.

Check the lyrics too. Some capoeira songs tell stories of history and everyday life, but others mention saints or spirits, and some groups open with religious chants. See Can I still listen to music after becoming Muslim?

Dance-like movement and mixed groups

Capoeira can look like dance, and the game involves two players moving close together. For women and men, the usual rules apply: modest clothing, and avoiding close contact with non-mahram partners. Many schools have women-only classes, or you can pair with a same-gender partner. Loose training clothes are common, and trousers and a long-sleeve top are standard in many groups. A sports hijab with no pins stays put during acrobatics. See Can Muslims do Zumba or dance workouts?

Questions to ask before you join

  • Does the class include religious songs, chants or rituals?
  • Is the music optional, or can you train without it?
  • Can you pick a same-gender partner?
  • Can I step out for prayer?
Key points
  • The movement is allowed in principle, and the sport is gentle.
  • Scholars differ on music, and many avoid instruments.
  • Watch for religious songs or rituals, and opt out of them.
