Yes, Muslims can send their kids to daycare. Islam doesn't forbid parents from using trusted childcare while they work or study. What matters is that the child is safe, cared for kindly, fed halal food and not pulled away from your values. Daycare, a childminder, a nanny or grandparents can all be good options.

Childcare has always existed

Paying someone else to help care for a child isn't new in Islam. The Prophet ﷺ himself spent his early years with a wet nurse, Halimah, in the desert. The Quran openly allows parents to arrange a substitute for nursing:

وَإِنْ أَرَدتُّمْ أَن تَسْتَرْضِعُوٓا۟ أَوْلَـٰدَكُمْ فَلَا جُنَاحَ عَلَيْكُمْ إِذَا سَلَّمْتُم مَّآ ءَاتَيْتُم بِٱلْمَعْرُوفِ "And if you wish to have your children nursed by a substitute, there is no blame upon you as long as you give payment according to what is acceptable." Quran 2:233

Parents are still the ones in charge. The Prophet ﷺ said "All of you are guardians" and responsible for those in your care (Sahih al-Bukhari 893). Using daycare doesn't hand that responsibility away; it means choosing carefully and staying involved.

Choosing a nursery

When you visit a daycare, ask about the things that matter for a Muslim family:

  • Food: can they offer vegetarian or halal meals, or let you send food from home? Check snacks and treats for pork gelatin. See Can I still eat gummy bears as a Muslim?
  • Celebrations: how do they handle Christmas, Easter or Halloween activities? Many nurseries are happy to offer an alternative or mark Eid too.
  • Staff and changing: who changes diapers and helps with the toilet, and how is privacy handled for older kids?
  • Photos: many daycares post pictures in apps or online, so ask what they share and who can see it. See Can I post photos of my kids on social media as a Muslim?
  • Warmth and safety: ratios, licensing, and how staff comfort a crying child.

Other options

Daycare isn't the only route. Some families prefer a childminder who cares for a few kids at home, a Muslim nanny or a shared nanny with another family, or a Muslim-run nursery where one exists nearby. Grandparents are a blessing too, including non-Muslim grandparents. Just talk kindly with them about food and a few basics. Many parents mix options, like part-time nursery plus a day with family.

Keeping your values at home

Whatever childcare you use, home is where children learn most about faith. Short routines go a long way: Bismillah at dinner, a bedtime dua, a story about a prophet, praying where they can see you. Some scholars encourage a mother to stay home with young children when the family can manage it, while others stress that working is allowed and that the family's real circumstances decide. Neither choice makes you a lesser parent.

Key points
  • Using daycare or other paid childcare is allowed in Islam.
  • Check food, celebrations, privacy, photos and safety.
  • Childminders, nannies and grandparents are good alternatives.
  • Your routines at home shape your child's faith the most.
Tip: Bring a one-page "about our family" note to the nursery: food rules, Eid dates and a few words your child uses. Staff appreciate it, and it saves repeating yourself.
