It depends on the kind of modelling. Modest fashion, hand, product and fully covered clothing shoots can be halal work. Swimwear, lingerie, revealing or sexualised shoots are not allowed for Muslim men or women, because they break the rules on covering and modesty.

Why modelling is a grey area

Modelling itself is just showing a product. The problem is what's usually being shown: bodies. Islam asks both men and women to cover their awrah and to avoid displaying beauty to attract strangers. The Quran addresses men first:

قُل لِّلْمُؤْمِنِينَ يَغُضُّوا۟ مِنْ أَبْصَـٰرِهِمْ وَيَحْفَظُوا۟ فُرُوجَهُمْ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ أَزْكَىٰ لَهُمْ ۗ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ خَبِيرٌۢ بِمَا يَصْنَعُونَ "Tell the believing men to reduce [some] of their vision and guard their private parts. That is purer for them. Indeed, Allah is Acquainted with what they do." Quran 24:30

The next verse gives women the same command and adds that they shouldn't display their adornment except what ordinarily appears. The Prophet ﷺ warned about "women who are clothed yet naked" (Sahih Muslim 2128), meaning clothes that are tight, see-through or revealing. See Can I wear tight or see-through clothes with hijab?

What's generally fine

  • Modest fashion: hijab brands, abayas, loose clothing, shot with dignity.
  • Parts modelling: hands for jewellery or watches, feet for shoes (with scholarly differences on women's feet), within limits.
  • Product and catalogue work for halal products where you are fully and loosely covered.
  • Men's modelling for suits, coats or sportswear, as long as the navel-to-knee area is covered and the shoot isn't sexualised.

Photography itself is debated. Most contemporary scholars allow photos of living beings, while a minority avoid them. If you follow the majority view, the content and purpose of the photo is what matters. See Can I post photos of myself online as a Muslim?

What's not allowed

  • Swimwear, underwear and lingerie campaigns.
  • Poses meant to be seductive, whatever the clothing.
  • Shoots that sell haram products such as alcohol or gambling.
  • Mixed photo shoots involving intimate contact with a non-mahram.

The industry itself

Even "modest" jobs come with pressure: body-image stress, late events, and agents pushing for "just a little more skin". If you go into it, set your limits in writing with your agency, and be ready to say no. Muslim models in Europe and the USA have built careers this way, though it often means fewer bookings at first. Fame can also test the heart. See Is it haram to be an influencer as a Muslim?

Key points
  • Modelling isn't automatically haram; content decides it.
  • Modest, fully covered and non-sexualised shoots are generally fine.
  • Revealing, seductive or haram-product shoots are not allowed.
  • Agree your limits with the agency before signing.
Tip: Look for modest-fashion agencies and Muslim-owned brands first. They already understand your boundaries, so you won't have to defend them on every set.
