Can Muslims work as photographers?

Yes, most contemporary scholars say Muslims can work as photographers, as long as the content is halal. Camera photography is widely seen as capturing an image, not "making" one. A minority of scholars are stricter, and everyone agrees to avoid immodest or haram shoots.
The hadith about image-makers
The question comes from hadiths that warn against making images. The Prophet ﷺ said that among the most severely punished people on the Day of Resurrection are the image-makers (Sahih al-Bukhari 5950). Classical scholars understood this mainly as making statues and drawings of living beings, especially to imitate Allah's creation or for worship. Drawing raises its own discussion. Scholars' views on camera photos
- Majority of contemporary scholars: a photograph captures light and shows what already exists, like a mirror. It isn't "creating" a form, so it is allowed. Many fatwa councils, including Al-Azhar, hold this view.
- A stricter view: some scholars treat photos of living beings as images, and allow them only for need, like passports, ID, security or education.
Both views exist among sincere scholars. Most Muslims in the West follow the majority view, and you are not doing wrong if you do too. The same discussion covers everyday photos. See Is it haram to take selfies?
What you photograph matters
Even under the lenient view, the content of your work must be halal. Islam asks believers to guard their eyes:
- Generally fine: landscapes, architecture, food, products, real estate, sports, news, nature, family portraits and corporate headshots.
- Needs care: weddings and events, especially of the opposite gender. Many Muslim photographers only shoot the women's side if they are women, or work as a mixed team.
- Not allowed: nude or sexualized shoots, lingerie campaigns, promoting alcohol or gambling, and anything that exposes people's privacy without consent.
Editing and AI
Normal editing like color, light and cropping is fine. Be careful with edits that deceive clients or customers, such as fake product results, and with heavy AI generation of people. See Can I make AI images of people as a Muslim?
- Most scholars allow camera photography as a job.

- Avoid immodest, sexual or haram-promoting shoots.
