Can Muslims work for a betting company?

No, Muslims should not work for a betting company, even in an office role like software, marketing or customer support. The company's whole business is gambling, which the Quran forbids, so every department helps it run. Working for an outside firm that has a bookmaker as one client among many is a lighter, debated case.
Why the job itself is the problem
A betting company, whether a high-street bookmaker, an online sportsbook or a casino app, earns its money from people losing bets. That's maysir (gambling), which Allah names alongside alcohol:
Allah also tells believers, "do not cooperate in sin and aggression" (Quran 5:2). Building the app, writing the ads or answering the support chat all keep the betting going. For the basic rule on placing bets, see Is sports betting haram?
"But I just write code" (or do HR, or accounts)
Many converts work in tech, data or finance and ask whether a back-office role is different. Most scholars say no: when a company's core product is haram, your salary comes from that product and your work serves it. A developer improving odds engines, a data analyst predicting player behaviour and a marketer designing sign-up bonuses are all directly helping. Even neutral-sounding jobs like HR or payroll exist to keep that business running.
The Prophet ﷺ said that Allah is pure and accepts only what is pure (Sahih Muslim 1015). Halal income matters because it affects your prayers, your duas and what you feed your family.
Lighter cases
- Agencies and contractors with many clients: if a betting firm is one client, ask not to work on that account. Scholars are more relaxed here, but avoid the gambling project itself.
- Affiliate and influencer deals promoting betting sites are not allowed, because you earn from bringing gamblers in. See Can I earn money from affiliate links as a Muslim?
- Gambling-addiction charities and regulators who protect people from gambling are a different thing and are fine.
If you already work there
Start looking for a new job now and leave as soon as you reasonably can, without putting your family in hardship. Repent sincerely; money earned before you knew is not held against you (Quran 2:275). Your skills in software, data and customer service are in demand in many halal industries.
- Betting companies earn from gambling, which is haram.
- Office, tech and marketing roles still serve that business.
- Agency work with one betting client is lighter; avoid that account.
- If you work there, plan to leave soon and repent.
