Can Muslims work for the government?

Yes, Muslims can work for the government. Public service jobs like teaching, healthcare, transport, planning or social work serve everyone and are halal. The only question is the specific task: avoid roles whose main work is clearly haram, and keep your honesty and prayers at work.
A prophet who worked for a non-Muslim ruler
The Quran tells the story of Prophet Yusuf (Joseph), who offered to manage the food stores of Egypt for its king:
Many scholars use this verse to show that a Muslim may hold public office under a government that isn't Islamic, when the work brings real benefit to people. The Prophet ﷺ also respected the Christian king of Abyssinia, who protected the early Muslims, and prayed the funeral prayer for him when he died (Sahih al-Bukhari 1245).
Most government jobs are simply good work
Public-sector jobs keep society running: nurses, teachers, firefighters, refuse collectors, IT staff, planners, statisticians, social workers. These are halal and often rewarding, because they serve the public. Muslims also serve as police officers, judges and elected officials. Where to be careful
- Roles centred on something haram: for example, promoting gambling for a state lottery or running interest-based lending. Supporting or admin roles in a large department are treated more leniently by many scholars.
- Injustice: no job allows you to harm innocent people, lie or take bribes.
- Laws you disagree with: applying the law in a secular system is not the same as believing in every law. Scholars differ on some roles, especially judging. See Can Muslims be lawyers or judges in a secular court?
Your rights as a Muslim employee
In the US, UK and EU, public employers must make reasonable accommodation for religion: prayer breaks, hijab, beard, and leave for Eid in many places. Ask politely through HR; it's usually easier than people expect.
- Government work is halal in principle.
- Prophet Yusuf served a non-Muslim king (Quran 12:55).
- Avoid roles whose core task is clearly haram or unjust.
- Public employers must accommodate prayer and dress.
