Can my child have godparents as a Muslim?

Not in the church sense, but your child can still have special adults in their life. Christian godparents make vows at a baptism to raise the child in the Christian faith, which a Muslim parent can't agree to. But a trusted aunt, uncle or family friend can absolutely be a mentor, a loving presence, or a guardian named in your will.

Why the church role doesn't fit

For many Christian families, being a godparent is an honor and a sign of love. In most churches, though, it's a religious role tied to baptism: godparents promise to help bring the child up in the Christian faith. A Muslim child isn't baptized, and a Muslim parent can't ask someone to make those vows for them. Islam has no equivalent sacrament. Instead, Muslims welcome a baby with the adhan, a good name and, for many families, an aqiqah celebration.

If your Christian parents or siblings ask, they're usually expressing love, not trying to convert anyone. You can thank them warmly and explain gently. See Do my children have to become Muslim if I do?

Keeping the bond without the vows

Islam encourages warm relationships with non-Muslim relatives who are kind to you.

لَّا يَنْهَىٰكُمُ ٱللَّهُ عَنِ ٱلَّذِينَ لَمْ يُقَـٰتِلُوكُمْ فِى ٱلدِّينِ وَلَمْ يُخْرِجُوكُم مِّن دِيَـٰرِكُمْ أَن تَبَرُّوهُمْ وَتُقْسِطُوٓا۟ إِلَيْهِمْ ۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ يُحِبُّ ٱلْمُقْسِطِينَ "Allah does not forbid you from those who do not fight you because of religion and do not expel you from your homes - from being righteous toward them and acting justly toward them. Indeed, Allah loves those who act justly." Quran 60:8

So the "godparent" relationship can live on in other ways:

  • A mentor or special aunt/uncle: birthday outings, reading together, helping with school.
  • Gifts and visits: grandparents and relatives can keep traditions that aren't religious rituals. See Can my kids get Christmas presents from their non-Muslim grandparents?
  • A different title: some families use "guide parent," "mentor" or simply "Auntie" to avoid confusion.

Guardians in your will

The serious side of a godparent, in many people's minds, is "who would raise the child if something happened to us?" That's really a legal question. In the UK and US, you appoint a guardian in your will. Many scholars recommend choosing a practicing Muslim guardian where possible, so your children are raised in the faith you chose for them, while keeping loving non-Muslim relatives closely involved. Talk it through with your spouse and write it down. See Do I have to follow Islamic inheritance rules in my will?

Handling the conversation

Lead with gratitude: "We'd love you to be a big part of her life." Then explain what you can't do and what you'd love them to do instead. Islam asks you to accompany family "in [this] world with appropriate kindness" even when you differ in faith (Quran 31:15).

Key points
  • Church godparenting involves baptism vows, so it isn't suitable for a Muslim child.
  • Loving non-Muslim relatives can still be mentors and special adults.
  • Name a legal guardian in your will; many scholars advise a Muslim guardian.
  • Explain kindly; the offer is usually a sign of love.
Tip: Invite the would-be godparent to your baby's aqiqah or welcome party and give them a role, like a short speech or reading. It honors them without any religious vows.
