Yes, the Quran describes moments when people in Jannah look at and speak to people in hell. These scenes show Allah's justice and the believers' gratitude. Scholars say they don't spoil the joy of Paradise, because Allah removes all sorrow from its people.

A conversation across the barrier

Surah al-A'raf describes the people of Paradise calling out to the people of the Fire:

وَنَادَىٰٓ أَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلْجَنَّةِ أَصْحَـٰبَ ٱلنَّارِ أَن قَدْ وَجَدْنَا مَا وَعَدَنَا رَبُّنَا حَقًّا فَهَلْ وَجَدتُّم مَّا وَعَدَ رَبُّكُمْ حَقًّا ۖ قَالُوا۟ نَعَمْ "And the companions of Paradise will call out to the companions of the Fire, 'We have already found what our Lord promised us to be true. Have you found what your Lord promised to be true?' They will say, 'Yes.'" Quran 7:44

The next verses mention a barrier between the two groups and people on its heights, al-A'raf, who know everyone by their marks (Quran 7:46-49). The people of the Fire then beg for some water or provision, and are told Allah has forbidden both to those who mocked the religion (Quran 7:50).

The man who looks for his old friend

In Surah as-Saffat, a believer in Jannah remembers a companion who used to mock him for believing in the resurrection. He looks down:

فَٱطَّلَعَ فَرَءَاهُ فِى سَوَآءِ ٱلْجَحِيمِ "And he will look and see him in the midst of the Hellfire." Quran 37:55

He then says, "By Allah, you almost ruined me," and thanks Allah for guiding him (Quran 37:56-57). The lesson for us is about the friends and influences we choose today.

Won't that make Jannah sad?

A fair question, especially for converts with non-Muslim family. Scholars answer in a few ways:

  • Allah removes every grudge and grief from the hearts of the people of Jannah (Quran 7:43), so nothing there causes them distress.
  • These glimpses appear to be specific moments, not a permanent view.
  • Only Allah judges who ends up where, and He is perfectly just and merciful. See Will my non-Muslim parents go to hell?

The details of how this seeing works are part of the unseen. We believe what the Quran tells us without guessing beyond it.

What this means for you now

These scenes are meant to move us today: to value faith, to choose friends who help us toward good, and to keep praying for the people we love while they're still alive. For more on both places, see What is hell like in Islam? and Will I see my family in Jannah?

Key points
  • The Quran describes people of Jannah speaking to people of hell (7:44).
  • A believer sees his old mocking friend in the Fire (37:55).
  • Allah removes all sorrow from Jannah, so its joy isn't spoiled.
  • Exactly how it happens is unseen; we affirm the texts.
Tip: Make dua for guidance for your non-Muslim loved ones regularly and by name. It's allowed, it's kind, and it's the most useful thing you can do for them.
