Yes, someone else can pay your zakat for you if you ask them or agree to it. Appointing an agent (wakil) to pay zakat is allowed by all four schools. The intention still has to be yours, so most scholars say zakat paid without your knowledge or approval does not count.

Agents in the time of the Prophet ﷺ

Handing zakat work to others was normal from the start. The Prophet ﷺ sent collectors to take zakat and distribute it, and the Quran even gives "those employed to collect" a share (Quran 9:60). Abu Hurayrah said the Prophet ﷺ put him in charge of guarding the zakat of Ramadan (Sahih al-Bukhari 2311). If a person can act for the whole community, they can certainly act for you.

Common situations

What makes it valid

Zakat is an act of worship, and "actions are judged by intentions" (Sahih al-Bukhari 1). So you make the intention that this payment is your zakat, either when you hand over the money or when you appoint the person. Your agent should give it to eligible people, keep it separate from their own money, and not use it for anything else.

If someone pays "your" zakat without telling you, the majority say it doesn't count, because you never intended it. Some scholars say it becomes valid if you approve it afterwards. To be safe, agree first.

Who pays from whose money?

An agent can pay from your money, or pay from their own as a gift to you. Either way, they should tell you the amount, so you know your obligation is covered.

Key points
  • Appointing someone to pay your zakat is allowed.
  • The intention must be yours, made in advance.
  • Zakat paid without your knowledge usually doesn't count.
  • Charities collecting zakat act as your agent.
Tip: Send your agent a short message such as "This is my zakat for this year, please give it to poor Muslims", and ask them to confirm when it's done. It keeps your intention clear and gives you a record.
