Can zakat be used to pay someone's rent?

Yes, zakat can be used to pay the rent of a poor or struggling Muslim. Housing is a basic need, and someone who can't afford it is exactly who zakat is for. You can give them the money, or, with their permission, pay the landlord directly on their behalf, which most scholars accept.
Why rent is a valid use of zakat
The first two categories in Quran 9:60 are the poor (fuqara) and the needy (masakin). Scholars define them as people who can't fully cover basic needs: food, clothing, and a place to live. A family facing eviction, a single mum whose wages don't cover her rent, or a convert thrown out by relatives all fit here. People behind on payments may also qualify as al-gharimin, those in debt.
The Prophet ﷺ also said that asking for help is allowed for someone hit by a disaster that wiped out his wealth, or by real poverty, until he gets back on his feet (Sahih Muslim 1044).
Paying the landlord directly
Scholars differ slightly here:
- The Hanafi school stresses that zakat must be placed in the recipient's ownership. So the cleanest way is to give the money to the person, or to pay the landlord only after they ask or agree, making you their agent.
- The other schools also allow paying a debt or bill on behalf of an eligible person, especially rent arrears, since it relieves them just the same.
Either way, getting the person's permission first keeps it valid by all views and respects their dignity. You don't have to say the word "zakat" when you give it. See Do I have to tell the person it's zakat?
Things to keep in mind
- Not for your own dependents. You can't use zakat to pay rent for your parents, children or wife, whom you must support anyway.
- Not your own tenant's rent. A landlord can't cancel a poor tenant's rent and count it as zakat; zakat has to be actually given.
- Real need. The person should be genuinely unable to cover housing, not just someone who would prefer help.
- Sadaqah fills the gaps. If someone doesn't strictly qualify, regular sadaqah can still help with their rent.
Rent is one of several practical needs zakat can meet. Education is another; see Can I pay someone's tuition with my zakat?

- Rent arrears can also fall under the category of debtors.
- Paying the landlord directly is fine with the person's permission.
