Do dreams mean anything in Islam?

Some dreams can mean something in Islam, but most don't. The Prophet ﷺ taught that dreams are of three kinds: good dreams from Allah, upsetting dreams from Shaytan, and everyday dreams from your own mind. Only the first kind may carry a message, and even then it's never a source of religious rulings.
The three kinds of dreams
The Prophet ﷺ said that dreams are of three types: a good dream, which is glad tidings from Allah; a frightening dream, which comes from Shaytan; and a dream about things a person has been thinking about (Sahih Muslim 2263).
- Good dreams (ru'ya): pleasant, calm and often clear. They can bring hope or encouragement.
- Bad dreams (hulm): nightmares and disturbing scenes meant to scare or sadden you. They carry no message.
- Self-talk dreams: your work, your worries or that film you watched before bed, replayed by the brain. Most dreams are this kind.
What to do after a good dream
Thank Allah for it. You may share it, but only with someone you love and trust, or someone with knowledge. Prophet Ya'qub told his son Yusuf to keep his dream private:
Even a good dream doesn't prove you are righteous or that a decision is correct. Use istikhara and normal good sense for real choices.
What to do after a bad dream
The Prophet ﷺ taught a simple routine: seek refuge in Allah from Shaytan and from the dream's harm, spit lightly (a dry puff) to the left three times, and don't tell anyone about it, and it will not harm you (Sahih Muslim 2261). Scholars add turning onto your other side or getting up to pray if you can. A nightmare is not a prophecy, so don't let it ruin your day. See What should I say before sleeping?
Be careful with dream interpretation
Dream interpretation is a real Islamic skill, shown in the story of Yusuf, but it needs knowledge and piety. Online "dream dictionaries" that give a fixed meaning for every symbol aren't reliable, and some slide into fortune-telling. Don't make big life decisions, or think badly of someone, because of a dream. See Can I still read my horoscope after becoming Muslim?

- Dreams come from Allah, from Shaytan, or from your own mind (Sahih Muslim 2263).
- Good dreams are glad tidings; share them only with people you trust.
- For bad dreams, seek refuge, puff left three times and tell no one.
- Dreams are never a source of rulings or a reason to accuse anyone.
