Do I have to be perfect to become Muslim?

No, you don't have to be perfect to become Muslim. Nobody is. Islam asks for sincere belief and the will to keep trying, not a spotless record. Your past sins are wiped clean at your shahada, and the door of repentance stays open after it.
Islam starts with belief, not perfection
To become Muslim you believe in one God and in Muhammad ﷺ as His Messenger, and you say the shahada. You don't need to know every rule, pray perfectly or have quit every bad habit first. Learning and changing come after, step by step. See Can I become Muslim if I still have doubts?
Your slate is wiped clean
When Amr ibn al-As hesitated to become Muslim because of his past, the Prophet ﷺ told him that Islam wipes out what came before it (Sahih Muslim 121). Whatever you did before, you start fresh. See Are all my sins forgiven when I become Muslim?
Muslims still make mistakes
Islam is realistic about people. The Prophet ﷺ said every child of Adam sins, and the best of those who sin are those who repent (Sunan Ibn Majah 4251). He even said that if people did not sin, Allah would bring others who sin and ask forgiveness, and He would forgive them (Sahih Muslim 2749). Allah wants a relationship of turning back to Him, not a performance.
So if you still struggle with drinking, smoking, bad language or a relationship, that is not a reason to delay faith. Become Muslim, then work on it with Allah's help. See Do I have to quit drinking before I become Muslim?
Grow at a gentle pace
- Start with the basics: belief, the five daily prayers, and avoiding the big sins.
- Add one good habit at a time instead of changing everything in a week.
- When you slip, say "astaghfirullah" (I seek Allah's forgiveness) and keep going.
- Don't compare yourself with people who were raised Muslim or with Instagram scholars.
The Prophet ﷺ said the religion is easy, and that whoever makes it too hard on themselves will be overwhelmed (Sahih al-Bukhari 39). Trying to be perfect overnight is a fast road to burnout. See What is convert burnout and how do I avoid it?
- Perfection is not a condition for becoming Muslim.
- The shahada wipes out past sins (Sahih Muslim 121).
- Every Muslim sins; the best ones repent.
- Change gradually; Islam is meant to be easy.
