Do I have to make wudu for every prayer?

No, you don't have to make a new wudu for every prayer. One wudu lasts until something breaks it, so you can pray Dhuhr, Asr and even Maghrib with the same wudu if you haven't used the toilet, slept deeply or passed wind in between. Renewing it for each prayer is a nice extra, not a duty.

One wudu, many prayers

Wudu is a state, not a single-use ticket. Once you have it, it stays with you until something cancels it. On the day Makkah was opened, the Prophet ﷺ prayed several prayers with a single wudu, and when Umar asked him about it, he said he had done it on purpose (Sahih Muslim 277). That settles it: praying more than one prayer with one wudu is completely fine.

The wudu verse tells believers to wash when they stand for prayer:

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوٓا۟ إِذَا قُمْتُمْ إِلَى ٱلصَّلَوٰةِ فَٱغْسِلُوا۟ وُجُوهَكُمْ وَأَيْدِيَكُمْ إِلَى ٱلْمَرَافِقِ "O you who have believed, when you rise to [perform] prayer, wash your faces and your forearms to the elbows..." Quran 5:6

Scholars explain that this means standing for prayer without wudu. The Prophet's ﷺ own practice shows that someone who still has wudu doesn't need to repeat it.

When you do need a new wudu

You only redo it when your wudu has actually been broken. The main things that break it are:

  • Using the toilet (urine or stool) or passing wind
  • Losing consciousness, for example fainting or being under anaesthetic
  • Deep sleep, where you lose awareness of what's around you. See Does sleeping break wudu?
  • Points the schools differ on, such as touching your private parts, or touching the opposite sex in the Shafi'i school. See What breaks wudu?

If you're unsure whether you broke your wudu, you still have it. The Prophet ﷺ told a man who felt something in his stomach not to leave the mosque unless he heard a sound or noticed a smell (Sahih Muslim 362). Certainty isn't removed by doubt.

Renewing wudu is a sunnah

The Prophet ﷺ himself often made a fresh wudu for each prayer. Anas said the Prophet ﷺ used to make wudu for every prayer, while the Companions would pray several prayers with one wudu as long as it wasn't broken (Sahih al-Bukhari 214). So if you have time and water, renewing it brings reward and a fresh, focused feeling before you stand in front of Allah. If you're at work or school with a tiny sink, don't feel guilty about keeping your morning wudu.

Special cases

A few people follow a different rule. Someone with constant bleeding (istihada), urine leakage or ongoing wind makes wudu after each prayer time begins and prays with it, even if the problem continues. If you wipe over socks, your wudu works like normal, and the wiping is valid for a day and a night at home. See Do I have to take off my socks every time I make wudu?

Key points
  • One wudu covers many prayers until something breaks it.
  • The Prophet ﷺ prayed several prayers with one wudu (Sahih Muslim 277).
  • Renewing wudu for each prayer is a recommended sunnah, not a duty.
  • If you're unsure whether it broke, you still have wudu.
Tip: Use the toilet before you make wudu, not right after. Leaving home or the office with fresh wudu and an empty bladder can carry you through two or three prayers without hunting for a sink.
