No, it's not required, but sitting is better. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ usually drank sitting and discouraged drinking while standing, yet he also drank standing at times. So most scholars say sitting is the recommended sunnah, and standing is allowed.

The evidence for sitting

Anas reported that the Prophet ﷺ disapproved of drinking water while standing (Sahih Muslim 2024). For this reason, sitting down to drink became a well-known part of Muslim table manners.

The evidence for standing

Ali ibn Abi Talib once drank water while standing at the gate of the mosque and said: "Some people dislike to drink while standing, but I saw the Prophet ﷺ doing as you have seen me doing now" (Sahih al-Bukhari 5615).

Many Muslims also drink Zamzam water standing, following a report in Sahih al-Bukhari (1637).

How scholars put it together

Most scholars combine these narrations like this: sitting is the better, recommended way, and drinking while standing is permissible. At the gym, on a hike, at a festival or grabbing a quick sip at work, there's no need to look for a chair.

Many scholars apply the same idea to eating: sitting down for a meal is better and more in line with the sunnah, but grabbing a snack while standing or walking isn't a sin. The goal is mindfulness and gratitude, not stress about posture.

وَكُلُوا۟ وَٱشْرَبُوا۟ وَلَا تُسْرِفُوٓا۟ "Eat and drink, but do not be excessive." Quran 7:31

Other easy drinking sunnahs

  • Say "Bismillah" before you drink.
  • Drink with your right hand. See Do I have to eat with my right hand only?
  • Drink in three breaths: the Prophet ﷺ used to breathe three times in the course of a drink (Sahih Muslim 2028).
  • Don't breathe into the cup itself.
  • Say "Alhamdulillah" when you finish.

None of these take extra time. They turn an ordinary glass of water into a small moment of gratitude.

Don't stress about it

New Muslims sometimes feel guilty every time they drink on the go. You don't need to. Sit when it's easy, stand when it isn't, and focus on the bigger things like your daily prayers.

Key points
