Do I have to wear hijab right away after becoming Muslim?

Yes, it's an obligation, but many converts take it step by step. The majority of scholars say covering the hair is required for Muslim women. Still, Islam is gradual, and many new Muslims start with prayer and build up to hijab over weeks or months. Never let hijab stop you from becoming Muslim.
What the Quran says
Scholars of the four schools understand this verse as requiring women to cover their hair and body, except the face and hands, in front of unrelated men. Hijab is about modesty as a whole: loose clothes, good manners and lowering the gaze, not just a scarf.
Islam came in stages
Aisha explained that the Quran first taught faith and the afterlife, and only later revealed rules about what's allowed and forbidden. "If the first thing to be revealed was: 'Do not drink alcoholic drinks,' people would have said, 'We will never leave alcoholic drinks'" (Sahih al-Bukhari 4993).
Many scholars and convert mentors apply this wisdom: build faith and prayer first, then add other practices as your heart grows ready.
Priorities for a new Muslim woman
- First: belief, the five prayers, and learning the basics.
- Then: modest clothing, which is often an easy first step.
- Then: hijab, starting maybe at the mosque, then with friends, then everywhere.
Not wearing hijab yet is a shortcoming to work on, not a reason to feel you're "not really Muslim."
Work, family and safety
Some converts worry about their job, their family's reaction or harassment. These are real concerns. In the USA and UK, laws protect religious dress at work in most cases. If you face genuine danger, talk to a scholar about your situation. Allah knows your circumstances.
