Yes, you need hijab in front of male friends, even ones you grew up with. Growing up together, however close, doesn't make someone a mahram. Only the men Allah lists, like your father, brothers and sons, can see you without it.

Who can see you without hijab

The Quran names the men in front of whom a woman may relax her hijab:

وَلَا يُبْدِينَ زِينَتَهُنَّ إِلَّا لِبُعُولَتِهِنَّ أَوْ ءَابَآئِهِنَّ أَوْ ءَابَآءِ بُعُولَتِهِنَّ أَوْ أَبْنَآئِهِنَّ أَوْ أَبْنَآءِ بُعُولَتِهِنَّ أَوْ إِخْوَٰنِهِنَّ "...and not expose their adornment except to their husbands, their fathers, their husbands' fathers, their sons, their husbands' sons, their brothers..." Quran 24:31

The verse goes on to add nephews, women, and young children. Childhood friends, neighbours, family friends you call "uncle," and boys you went to school with aren't on the list, so with them you cover as you would with any adult man. See Who can see me without my hijab?

"But he's like a brother to me"

That feeling is real and it's fine to value it. But being like a brother isn't the same as being one in Islamic law. A mahram is someone you can never marry, through blood, marriage or breastfeeding. A childhood friend, however close, is someone you could marry. See What is a mahram?

The Prophet ﷺ even warned about relatives who are close to the household but not mahram, like a husband's brother, saying, "The in-law is death" (Sahih al-Bukhari 5232). He meant that familiarity makes people relax the rules, and that's exactly where care is needed.

Keeping the friendship in a halal way

  • Wear hijab around him, including at your home or family gatherings.
  • Avoid being alone together in a closed room or car; meet in groups or public places.
  • Keep the tone respectful, without flirting or very personal chats late at night.
  • Explain kindly. Most old friends understand once you tell them it's about your faith, not about them.

For new converts

If you've just become Muslim, this can feel strange: friends who saw you in shorts at the beach now see you in hijab. That's okay. Take it step by step, and remember that the change is between you and Allah. Real friends will adjust.

Key points
  • Childhood male friends are not mahram.
  • You wear hijab in front of them like any other man.
  • Closeness and familiarity call for more care, not less.
  • You can keep the friendship with respectful boundaries.
Tip: Tell your close friends about your hijab before a get-together rather than surprising them. A short, relaxed message makes the first meeting much less awkward for everyone.
