No. You don't need to know how to pray before taking your shahada. Almost every convert learns the prayer afterwards, step by step. Start with the basics, use simple words of remembrance while you learn, and Allah rewards your effort along the way.

Shahada first, then prayer

When the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ sent Mu'adh to Yemen, he told him to invite people to the shahada first, "and if they obey you to do so, then teach them that Allah has enjoined on them five prayers" (Sahih al-Bukhari 1395). Learning prayer came after accepting Islam, not before.

Even companions learned with mistakes

A man once prayed in the mosque, and the Prophet ﷺ told him: "Go back and pray, for you have not prayed." After a few tries, the Prophet patiently taught him each step (Sahih al-Bukhari 757). Learning prayer has always been a process. See Can I pray with Muslims if I'm not Muslim yet?

What to say while you're learning

A man told the Prophet ﷺ he couldn't memorize any Quran. The Prophet taught him to say: "Glory be to Allah, and praise be to Allah, and there is no god but Allah, and Allah is most great, and there is no might and no strength but in Allah" (Sunan Abi Dawud 832).

Many scholars say new Muslims can use phrases like these in prayer while they learn Al-Fatiha and the other parts.

فَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ مَا ٱسْتَطَعْتُمْ "So fear Allah as much as you are able." Quran 64:16

A simple learning plan

  • Week 1: learn wudu and the basic movements: standing, bowing, prostrating, sitting.
  • Week 2: learn "Allahu akbar" and short phrases for each position.
  • Weeks 3–6: memorize Al-Fatiha, line by line, with transliteration.
  • Then: add a short surah like Al-Ikhlas.

Praying next to others at the mosque helps you learn by copying. Apps and printed cards are fine to use at home while you learn.

Be gentle with yourself

Your first prayers may feel clumsy or empty. That's normal. See What if I don't feel anything when I pray? and Do I have to pray five times a day right after becoming Muslim?
