Do I need to remove my braces or retainer for ghusl?

No, you don't need to remove fixed braces for ghusl. Anything stuck to your teeth that you can't take out yourself is excused. A removable retainer is different: it's best to take it out so you can rinse your mouth fully, and in the Hanafi and Hanbali schools that rinse is required.
Fixed braces, fillings and crowns
Fixed braces are glued to your teeth and only a dentist can remove them. Scholars agree you're not asked to take off something that would need a professional or cause harm. The same goes for fillings, crowns, bridges, veneers and implants. Your ghusl is valid with them in.
Just rinse your mouth well and swish the water around the brackets as best you can. That's all that's asked of you.
Removable retainers and aligners
Here the schools differ, because they differ on rinsing the mouth in ghusl:
- Hanafi and Hanbali: rinsing the mouth is a required part of ghusl. Water should reach the teeth and gums, so take out a removable retainer, aligner or denture first.
- Maliki and Shafi'i: rinsing the mouth in ghusl is a sunnah, not a condition. Your ghusl is valid even if the retainer stays in, though removing it is still better.
Since a retainer takes seconds to remove, the easy and safe choice is to take it out, rinse your mouth, then put it back after ghusl. You may want to clean it at the same time anyway.

What about wudu?
In wudu, most scholars say rinsing the mouth is a sunnah, while the Hanbali school treats it as required. Either way, fixed braces are fine. With a removable retainer, take it out if you can easily; if you're out and it's awkward, the majority view lets you leave it in.
Food stuck in braces
Small bits of food caught in braces don't make ghusl invalid. Scholars excuse what's hard to remove. If something large is clearly stuck, it's good to clear it, but don't let it turn into anxiety. Brushing and flossing before ghusl solves most of it.
