Do I need wudu for sujud ash-shukr?

It depends on the school, but many scholars say you don't need wudu for sujud ash-shukr. The majority of classical scholars treat it like prayer and ask for wudu and facing the qiblah. A strong group of scholars, including Ibn Taymiyyah, say it is not a prayer, so you can drop into sujud straight away when good news comes.

What is sujud ash-shukr?

Sujud ash-shukr means "the prostration of gratitude". It is a single prostration you make when something good happens or a harm is lifted: you pass an exam, get the job, your baby is born safely, or a loved one recovers. Abu Bakrah reported that when the Prophet ﷺ received news that made him happy, he would fall down in prostration to Allah (Sunan Abi Dawud 2774). When the Companion Ka'b ibn Malik heard that Allah had accepted his repentance, he immediately fell into sujud (Sahih al-Bukhari 4418).

وَإِذْ تَأَذَّنَ رَبُّكُمْ لَئِن شَكَرْتُمْ لَأَزِيدَنَّكُمْ "And when your Lord proclaimed, 'If you are grateful, I will surely increase you.'" Quran 14:7

The two views on wudu

  • Majority view (Hanafi, Shafi'i, Hanbali, and many Maliki scholars): it has the same conditions as prayer, so you need wudu, clean clothes, covered awrah and to face the qiblah.
  • Other view: it is not a prayer, because it has no takbir to start, no tashahhud and no salam. Al-Bukhari mentions in a chapter heading that Ibn Umar would prostrate for a Quran sajdah verse without wudu. Scholars like Ibn Taymiyyah and Ash-Shawkani applied the same reasoning to sujud ash-shukr, since good news often comes when you have no wudu and the joy is in the moment.

Both views are respected. If you have wudu or can make it quickly, that's the safest and most complete way. If the moment would pass, following the second view is reasonable. The same question comes up with the Quran prostration. See What do I do when I reach a sajdah verse in the Quran?

How to do it

  1. Say "Allahu akbar" (many scholars recommend it) and go down into one prostration.
  2. Say "Subhana rabbiyal a'la" and thank Allah in your own words, in any language.
  3. Get up. There is no tashahhud or salam according to most scholars.

Don't do it inside your salah as an extra prostration; wait until you finish. And you can make dua in it freely. See Can I make dua during sujood?

If you can't prostrate

At work, on a train, or in a crowded place, there's no need to drop to the floor. Simply say "Alhamdulillah" from your heart. Gratitude is the goal; the sujud is one beautiful way of showing it.

Key points
  • Sujud ash-shukr is a single prostration of thanks after good news.
  • The majority require wudu and facing the qiblah.
  • A respected minority say wudu isn't required, since it isn't a prayer.
  • It's sunnah, not obligatory, so there's no sin in skipping it.
Tip: Keep it simple at home: when good news arrives, make a quick wudu if you can, face the qiblah, and prostrate. It's a habit that turns happy moments into worship, and your kids will remember seeing it. See Do I have to make wudu for every prayer?
