Do I pay zakat on a joint bank account?

Yes, but each person pays zakat only on their own share of a joint account. Zakat is on the owner of the money, not on the account. Work out how much of the balance belongs to you, add it to your other savings, and pay 2.5% if your total reaches the nisab.

Zakat follows ownership

In Islam, every adult owns their own wealth. Marriage doesn't merge a husband's and wife's property, and opening an account together doesn't either. The Quran protects each person's right to their own money:

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ لَا تَأْكُلُوٓا۟ أَمْوَٰلَكُم بَيْنَكُم بِٱلْبَـٰطِلِ "O you who have believed, do not consume one another's wealth unjustly..." Quran 4:29

So the question is never "how much is in the account?" but "how much of it is mine?"

Working out your share

  • You both pay in and both own it: split by what each put in, or by whatever you agreed (for example, half each).
  • It's one person's money: sometimes a parent adds a child, or a spouse adds the other, just for convenience. The real owner pays the zakat on the whole balance.
  • A household account for bills: money already committed to rent and groceries this month can be left out by many scholars, like debts due now.
  • Unclear? Agree on a fair split together and write it down.

Each person checks their own nisab

Once you know your share, add it to your personal savings, gold, investments and other zakatable wealth. If your total is above the nisab, you pay 2.5%. Your partner does the same with their share. One of you may be above the nisab and the other below; that's normal. See How do I calculate my zakat?

For married couples

A wife owns her salary, her mahr and her savings, even if they sit in a shared account. Her zakat is her responsibility, though her husband may pay it for her with her permission. See Does a husband have to pay his wife's zakat?

If your spouse isn't Muslim, they have no zakat duty. You pay only on your own share. See Do I pay zakat on my savings account?

Key points
  • Zakat is paid by owners, not by accounts.
  • Each person counts only their share of a joint balance.
  • If the money is really one person's, that person pays on all of it.
  • Each owner checks the nisab against their own total wealth.
Tip: Have a short, kind money talk with whoever shares the account: who owns what, and who pays which zakat. A clear agreement now avoids awkward questions later.
