Do jinn die?

Yes, jinn die. Like humans, jinn are created beings with a set lifespan, and every one of them will die by Allah's decree. Only Allah is ever-living. Jinn may live much longer than us, but they are not immortal.
Everything except Allah perishes
The Quran states a general rule that covers every creature, including jinn, whom Surah ar-Rahman addresses again and again alongside humans:
The Prophet ﷺ made this explicit in a dua: "I seek refuge in Your might, there is no god but You, who does not die, while the jinn and humans die" (Sahih Muslim 2717). That one line answers the question directly.
How long do jinn live?
Islamic sources don't give a fixed lifespan. Many scholars say jinn generally live longer than humans, and some later writers mention ages of hundreds of years, but there's no authentic text with a number. What is certain is that Iblis (Satan), who is from the jinn, asked Allah for respite "until the Day they are resurrected", and Allah granted it until a known time (Quran 15:36-38). Scholars understand this as a special delay for Iblis, not a rule for all jinn. See Is Iblis an angel or a jinn?
Jinn are also judged
Because jinn have free will, their life matters in the same way ours does:
- They are created to worship Allah (Quran 51:56).
- Some believe and some disbelieve. See Can jinn be Muslim?
- They will be resurrected and held to account on the Day of Judgement.
- Scholars agree disbelieving jinn go to Hell; the majority say believing jinn enter Paradise.
Why this matters for you
Some people fear jinn as if they were all-powerful, ageless spirits. Knowing they are mortal creatures, weaker than many think and fully under Allah's control, takes that fear down to size. They eat, have families, live and die. For the basics on who they are, see What are jinn in Islam?
- Jinn die; only Allah is ever-living (Sahih Muslim 2717).
- Everything on earth perishes (Quran 55:26-27).
- Their lifespan isn't fixed in authentic texts; often thought longer than ours.
- Iblis was given a special respite; other jinn weren't.
