Do jinn know the future?

No, jinn do not know the future. Knowledge of the unseen (ghayb) belongs to Allah alone. Jinn once eavesdropped on the heavens and passed scraps to fortune tellers mixed with lies, and the Quran shows they didn't even notice when Prophet Sulayman had died.

The story of Sulayman's staff

Prophet Sulayman (Solomon) had jinn working for him. He died while standing, leaning on his staff, and the jinn kept laboring, not realizing it, until a creature of the earth ate through the staff and he fell:

فَلَمَّا خَرَّ تَبَيَّنَتِ ٱلْجِنُّ أَن لَّوْ كَانُوا۟ يَعْلَمُونَ ٱلْغَيْبَ مَا لَبِثُوا۟ فِى ٱلْعَذَابِ ٱلْمُهِينِ "…But when he fell, it became clear to the jinn that if they had known the unseen, they would not have remained in humiliating punishment." Quran 34:14

If jinn couldn't see a death right in front of them, they certainly can't see tomorrow.

Stolen whispers and a hundred lies

The Prophet ﷺ explained that angels speak in the clouds about matters Allah has decreed. Devils would try to listen, catch a word, and pass it to a fortune teller, who would add a hundred lies to it (Sahih al-Bukhari 3210). That's why a "psychic" is occasionally right: one stolen truth hidden among many lies. The Quran says the jinn later found the heavens guarded with flames, making this much harder (Quran 72:8-9).

Why you shouldn't consult anyone who claims to know

  • It's a serious sin. The Prophet ﷺ said whoever goes to a fortune teller and asks about something, his prayer isn't accepted for forty nights (Sahih Muslim 2230).
  • Horoscopes, tarot and readers fall under the same ruling. See Can I still read my horoscope after becoming Muslim? and Is tarot reading haram?
  • Jinn can know hidden things in the present, like where an object is, because they move fast and unseen. That's not the future, and it doesn't make them reliable.

Where certainty comes from

Allah says no one in the heavens or earth knows the unseen except Him (Quran 27:65). Instead of chasing predictions, Islam teaches you to plan, make dua, pray istikhara for big decisions, and trust what Allah has decreed. See What is qadr in Islam?

Key points
  • Only Allah knows the unseen and the future.
  • Jinn didn't know Sulayman had died (Quran 34:14).
  • Fortune tellers mix one stolen word with lies (Sahih al-Bukhari 3210).
  • Asking a fortune teller harms your prayer (Sahih Muslim 2230).
Tip: When you feel anxious about the future, learn the istikhara dua. It turns the urge to "find out" into asking the One who actually knows, and then you can move forward in peace.
