No, Muslim men don't have to dress differently from non-Muslims in general. Jeans, suits, T-shirts and hoodies are all fine. What Islam asks is that your clothes are modest, clean and lawful, and that you avoid items that are religious symbols or signs of another faith.

No single "Muslim uniform"

Islam spread across Arabia, Africa, Asia and Europe, and Muslims kept wearing the clothes of their own lands. The Prophet ﷺ himself wore garments from other regions, including cloaks made in Yemen and Syria. Scholars agree that the default for clothing is permission. A thobe or kurta is a cultural choice, not a religious requirement, and becoming Muslim doesn't mean becoming Arab or Pakistani. See Is Islam only for Arabs?

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلنَّاسُ إِنَّا خَلَقْنَـٰكُم مِّن ذَكَرٍ وَأُنثَىٰ وَجَعَلْنَـٰكُمْ شُعُوبًا وَقَبَآئِلَ لِتَعَارَفُوٓا۟ ۚ إِنَّ أَكْرَمَكُمْ عِندَ ٱللَّهِ أَتْقَىٰكُمْ "O mankind, indeed We have created you from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another. Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you." Quran 49:13

What "imitating" really means

The Prophet ﷺ said, "Whoever imitates a people is one of them" (Sunan Abi Dawud 4031). Scholars explain that this is about things that are distinctive of another religion or of people known for sin, not ordinary everyday clothing that everyone wears. Examples to avoid:

  • Religious symbols, such as a cross or clothing worn as part of another faith's worship.
  • Outfits tied to another religion's festivals, worn to take part in them. See Can I wear a Christmas sweater as a Muslim?
  • Styles that only make sense as copying a sinful group's identity.

The real rules for men

  • Cover the awrah: from the navel to the knees, with clothes that aren't see-through.
  • No silk or gold for men, as the Prophet ﷺ forbade both to men of his nation.
  • No imitating women in clothing and accessories.
  • No arrogance: clothes worn to look down on others are disliked, whatever their style.

Where Muslims do look different

Some differences are part of the Sunnah, like the beard. The Prophet ﷺ said, "Be different from the polytheists: let the beard grow and trim the moustache" (Sahih al-Bukhari 5892). That is about grooming, not about your jacket or trainers. New Muslims can grow into these sunnahs gradually. See Do I have to grow a beard right away?

Key points
  • There's no compulsory "Muslim style" for men.
  • Everyday Western clothes are fine if they're modest.
  • Avoid other religions' symbols and festival outfits.
  • Silk, gold and imitating women are off-limits for men.
Tip: Keep your wardrobe and add, rather than replace. A clean shirt you already own is perfect for Jumu'ah. If you enjoy it, pick up a thobe or kufi for the mosque later, but never feel you need one to "look Muslim."
