Do Muslim men have to wear trousers above the ankles?

It depends on the scholarly view you follow. All scholars agree it's forbidden for men to let their trousers drag below the ankles out of pride. Most of the four schools say that without pride it's only disliked, while many contemporary scholars say men should keep their trousers above the ankles in all cases.
What the hadith says
The Prophet ﷺ said: "Whatever of the lower garment is below the ankles is in the Fire" (Sahih al-Bukhari 5787). He ﷺ also said that Allah will not look on the Day of Resurrection at the one who drags his garment out of pride. Abu Bakr then said that one side of his garment slips down unless he keeps holding it up, and the Prophet ﷺ replied that he was not one of those who do it out of pride (Sahih al-Bukhari 5784).
The Arabic term for letting clothes hang below the ankles is isbal. It applies to men, not women; women are told to cover their feet.
Why scholars differ
- Majority of the four schools (many Hanafi, Maliki, Shafi'i and Hanbali scholars): the warning is tied to pride, as Abu Bakr's case shows. Without pride, long trousers are disliked, not haram.
- Other scholars, including many contemporary ones: isbal is forbidden in itself, and doing it out of pride is worse. They say the general hadith stands on its own.
Both views agree on one thing: pride is the real danger, and keeping your trousers at or above the ankle is the safer and more modest choice.
In daily Western life
- Hemming: a tailor can shorten trousers so they sit just at or above the ankle bone. Cropped and "ankle-length" cuts are common in Western fashion anyway.
- Work suits: a slightly shorter break looks smart and won't stand out.
- Prayer: some men roll up their trousers right before praying. Scholars differ on folding clothes during prayer, so it's better to have trousers the right length from the start.

- Dragging clothes below the ankles out of pride is haram by agreement.
- Without pride: disliked for most of the four schools, haram for many others.
- This rule is for men only.
- Ankle-length trousers are the safe and easy option.
