Yes. Muslims believe in both heaven (Jannah, "the Garden") and hell (Jahannam, "the Fire"). Belief in the Last Day, when everyone is raised and judged, is one of the six articles of Islamic faith. Muslims believe God judges with perfect justice and immense mercy, and that only He decides who goes where.

What Muslims believe about heaven

Jannah is a real place of endless peace and joy, prepared for those who believed and did good. The Quran describes gardens, rivers, shade, reunions with loved ones, and no more pain, fatigue or sadness.

وَسَارِعُوٓا۟ إِلَىٰ مَغْفِرَةٍ مِّن رَّبِّكُمْ وَجَنَّةٍ عَرْضُهَا ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتُ وَٱلْأَرْضُ أُعِدَّتْ لِلْمُتَّقِينَ "And hasten to forgiveness from your Lord and a garden as wide as the heavens and earth, prepared for the righteous." Quran 3:133

Still, the real Paradise is beyond anything we can picture. God says, in words the Prophet ﷺ reported: "I have prepared for My pious slaves things which have never been seen by an eye, or heard by an ear, or imagined by a human being" (Sahih al-Bukhari 3244).

What Muslims believe about hell

Jahannam is a place of punishment for serious wrongdoing and for rejecting God after the truth was clearly known. The Quran describes it vividly as a warning, so people turn back while they still can.

  • It's about justice: wrongs that went unpunished in this life are finally answered.
  • It isn't always forever: the Prophet ﷺ said God will order that those with "faith equal to the weight of a grain of mustard seed" be taken out of Hell (Sahih al-Bukhari 22). Many believers who sinned may be purified and then enter Paradise.
  • God alone decides: no person can say for sure that a specific individual is in hell.

Mercy comes first

Muslims believe God's mercy is far greater than His anger. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Allah created mercy in one hundred parts and He retained with Him ninety-nine parts, and He has sent down upon the earth one part," and all the love between living creatures comes from that one part (Sahih Muslim 2752).

Islam also teaches that no one is punished for a message that never reached them properly (Quran 17:15), and most scholars hold that children who die go to Paradise. See What happens to babies who die in Islam? If you're worried about loved ones, see Will my non-Muslim parents go to hell?

How it shapes daily life

  • Hope and fear together: Muslims are taught to hope for God's mercy while taking their choices seriously.
  • Fairness matters: every act of kindness or cruelty counts.
  • Never too late: sincere repentance before death wipes the slate clean.
