No. Muslims don't believe in reincarnation. Islam teaches that each person lives one life on earth, dies once, waits in an in-between stage called barzakh, and is then resurrected on the Day of Judgment. The soul doesn't come back in a new body or as an animal.

One life, then the return to God

The Quran describes the human journey in a few clear steps:

كَيْفَ تَكْفُرُونَ بِٱللَّهِ وَكُنتُمْ أَمْوَٰتًا فَأَحْيَـٰكُمْ ۖ ثُمَّ يُمِيتُكُمْ ثُمَّ يُحْيِيكُمْ ثُمَّ إِلَيْهِ تُرْجَعُونَ "How can you disbelieve in Allah when you were lifeless and He brought you to life; then He will cause you to die, then He will bring you [back] to life, and then to Him you will be returned." Quran 2:28

Notice the order: one life, one death, then resurrection and return to God. There's no cycle of births and deaths on earth. As the Quran also says, "Every soul will taste death, and you will only be given your [full] compensation on the Day of Resurrection" (Quran 3:185).

No coming back

The Quran describes someone at the moment of death begging, "My Lord, send me back, that I might do righteousness in that which I left behind." The answer is "No!", and "behind them is a barrier until the Day they are resurrected" (Quran 23:99-100).

That barrier is the barzakh, the life of the grave. See What happens in the grave in Islam?

What about karma and past lives?

Islam does share the idea that actions have consequences, but it works differently from karma in Hindu or Buddhist teachings:

  • Judgment, not rebirth: your deeds are weighed by God, who is just and merciful, not by an impersonal law.
  • Forgiveness is possible: sincere repentance can wipe out sins, so you don't have to "pay them off" in another life.
  • Past-life memories: Muslims don't see these as proof of rebirth. Scholars explain such experiences in other ways, such as imagination, dreams or suggestion.

What happens after resurrection

On the Day of Judgment, the same person who lived is raised again, body and soul, and then enters Paradise or Hell by God's judgment and mercy. Some people ask whether pets come back too. See Will my dog go to heaven in Islam?

If you're new to Islam, this one-life view can feel like pressure. Many converts find it freeing instead: today matters, and every good deed counts. See What happens if I die right after taking my shahada?

Key points
  • Islam rejects reincarnation.
  • Each person lives once, dies once and is resurrected.
  • The barzakh is a waiting stage, not a new life.
  • Deeds are judged by God, and repentance can erase sins.
Tip: If friends who believe in reincarnation ask about this, you can find common ground in the idea that how we live matters deeply. Then explain the Islamic view simply: one life, a fair Judge, and a lot of mercy.
