Do Muslims believe in soulmates?
It depends on what you mean by "soulmate." If it means one perfect person fated for you from birth, Islam does not teach that. If it means a spouse who brings you peace, love and mercy, Islam describes exactly that as a sign of Allah. Everything is known to Allah, but you are asked to choose wisely.
Marriage as a sign of Allah
The Quran speaks warmly about the bond between spouses:
Notice the focus: comfort, compassion and mercy. These are qualities that grow through time, kindness and effort, not just a feeling of destiny at first sight.
Is there one person written for me?
Muslims believe Allah knows everything, including who you will marry, because everything is written. But we do not know what is written, so we are not asked to wait for a sign or a feeling of "the one." We are asked to choose well and to ask Allah for guidance, for example through the istikhara prayer (Sahih al-Bukhari 6382). See What is istikhara and should I pray it before marriage?
Some people point to the hadith that "souls are like recruited troops: those with like qualities are inclined to each other" (Sahih al-Bukhari 3336). Scholars understand this as natural harmony between people of similar character. It is not a promise of one fated partner.
Choose well, then build
The Prophet ﷺ advised looking for religion and good character in a spouse (Jami at-Tirmidhi 1084). A good marriage in Islam usually has these ingredients:
- shared values and faith, not just attraction
- honest communication and respect
- patience with each other's flaws
- dua for each other, like the prayer for spouses who are "the joy of our hearts" (Quran 25:74)
Love and attraction matter too, and Islam does not dismiss them. See Should I marry for love or for religion in Islam?
If you are waiting, or it ended
Pressure to find "the one" can make people feel they have failed if they are still single or if a marriage ended. In Islam, a marriage that ends does not mean you missed your only match, and a spouse who is a good fit can grow into a deep partner. For converts looking for a spouse, see How do I find a spouse as a new Muslim convert?
- Islam does not teach a single fated soulmate you must find.
- Spouses are a sign of Allah, bringing comfort, compassion and mercy (Quran 30:21).
- Choose for religion and character, and pray istikhara.
- A good marriage is built with effort, not only found.
