Do Muslims have to circumcise their sons?

Yes, for most scholars it's either required or a strongly emphasized sunnah. Circumcising boys is one of the oldest and most widely kept Muslim practices, going back to Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham). Most families do it in infancy, by a doctor, and it's legal in the USA, the UK and the rest of Europe.
Where the practice comes from
The Prophet ﷺ listed circumcision first among the five practices of the fitra, the natural, clean way of life Allah created people on, alongside trimming the nails and the moustache (Sahih al-Bukhari 5889, Sahih Muslim 257). He also said that Ibrahim circumcised himself at the age of eighty (Sahih al-Bukhari 3356). Muslims see it as part of following the way of Ibrahim, and it's shared with Jewish tradition. Is it obligatory or sunnah?
Scholars agree it's a good and important practice for boys, but they classify it differently:
- Shafi'i and Hanbali: obligatory (wajib) for males.
- Hanafi and Maliki: a strongly emphasized sunnah (sunnah mu'akkadah), and a recognized sign of being Muslim.
In practice the difference rarely matters for parents: across all four schools, Muslim families circumcise their sons. Female circumcision is a separate issue; it's illegal in the US, the UK and the EU, and no parent should arrange it.
When and how it's done
There's no fixed day. Some families choose the seventh day after birth, together with the aqiqah, but scholars give a wide window: any time before puberty is fine, and earlier is usually easier for the child. Today most parents in the West choose a medical circumcision:
- In hospital: some US hospitals offer it before you take your baby home.
- Private clinics: in the UK it isn't routine on the NHS, so families use private clinics, often run by Muslim or Jewish doctors.
- Pain relief and aftercare: ask about local anaesthetic, healing time and follow-up before you book.
Talk to your pediatrician first, especially if your son was born early or has a health condition. A delay for medical reasons is completely acceptable.
What if my son is older, or it's me?
If you became Muslim with an uncircumcised older child, there's no rush or panic. Talk with him in an age-appropriate way, follow his doctor's advice, and never force a frightening procedure on him. Adult converts aren't required to be circumcised to become Muslim, and many scholars excuse it when there's fear of harm. See Do I need to be circumcised to become Muslim?
If your child's other parent isn't Muslim, it's a decision to make together, and in some cases the law expects both parents to agree. See Do my children have to become Muslim if I do?
- Circumcision is part of the fitra and the way of Ibrahim.
- Shafi'i and Hanbali say obligatory; Hanafi and Maliki say strong sunnah.
