Do Muslims have to shave their pubic hair?

Muslims are strongly encouraged to remove pubic hair, but shaving isn't the only way. It's one of the acts of fitrah (natural hygiene) for both men and women. Trimming, waxing, creams and laser are all fine. Scholars say you shouldn't leave it longer than 40 days.
Part of the fitrah
The Prophet ﷺ said that five things are part of the fitrah: circumcision, shaving the pubic hair, clipping the nails, plucking the armpit hair and trimming the moustache (Sahih al-Bukhari 5889). Fitrah means the clean, natural way people were created to live. These habits keep the body fresh and make purity for prayer easier.
Most scholars classify removing pubic hair as a strongly recommended sunnah, not a fard. Your prayer and ghusl are valid either way. But it's a sunnah that Muslims everywhere take seriously.
The 40-day limit
Anas ibn Malik said that a time limit was set for them for trimming the moustache, clipping the nails, plucking the armpit hair and shaving the pubic hair: it should not be left for more than forty nights (Sahih Muslim 258). Many scholars say leaving it longer without a reason is disliked. In practice, most Muslims remove it every one to three weeks, whenever it suits them. The same rhythm works for nails. See Is it okay to cut my nails at night?
Shaving, trimming, waxing or laser?
The hadith mentions shaving, but scholars agree the goal is removing the hair, so any safe method counts:
- Shaving or trimming very short at home.
- Hair removal cream, if it doesn't irritate your skin.
- Waxing or sugaring, done yourself.
- Laser, which many scholars allow, though most say a technician shouldn't see or touch your private area. Doing it yourself with a home device avoids that issue.
The awrah rule matters here: salon treatments that need someone else to see your private parts are a problem for most scholars, even if they're the same gender.
For new Muslims
If this is new to you, there's no need to panic. Start at a pace that's comfortable and build it into your routine, like the other fitrah habits. Converts often ask similar questions about circumcision and beards. See Do I need to be circumcised to become Muslim? and Do I have to grow a beard right away?
- Removing pubic hair is a sunnah of fitrah for men and women.
- It's strongly recommended, not a condition for prayer.
- Don't leave it more than 40 days (Sahih Muslim 258).
- Any safe method is fine; keep your awrah private.
