Does dhikr count if my mind wanders?

Yes, dhikr still counts if your mind wanders. Saying the words of remembrance is rewarded even when your focus slips, and you are not punished for thoughts that drift in. Dhikr with a present heart is better, though, so keep gently bringing your attention back.

Wandering thoughts are normal

Almost everyone who does dhikr finds their mind drifting to work, dinner or an old argument. That doesn't cancel what you said. The Prophet ﷺ said Allah has forgiven his followers the thoughts that pass through their minds, as long as they don't act on them or speak them (Sahih al-Bukhari 5269). A stray thought is not a sin, and it doesn't wipe out your SubhanAllah. See Will Allah punish me for my intrusive thoughts?

Levels of dhikr

Scholars often describe dhikr in levels:

  • Tongue only: you say the words but your mind is elsewhere. This is still good and rewarded, and it is far better than silence or idle talk.
  • Tongue and heart: you say the words and think about their meaning. This is the higher level and brings the most benefit.
  • Heart fully present: the words fill your attention and you feel close to Allah. This comes with practice.

Many scholars advised: don't stop dhikr because your heart isn't present, because the tongue's remembrance can lead you to the heart's remembrance. Leaving it altogether is the real loss.

ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَتَطْمَئِنُّ قُلُوبُهُم بِذِكْرِ ٱللَّهِ ۗ أَلَا بِذِكْرِ ٱللَّهِ تَطْمَئِنُّ ٱلْقُلُوبُ "Those who have believed and whose hearts are assured by the remembrance of Allah. Unquestionably, by the remembrance of Allah hearts are assured." Quran 13:28

Simple ways to focus better

  • Learn the meanings. Knowing that "Alhamdulillah" means "all praise is for Allah" makes it easier to mean it.
  • Slow down. Ten phrases said calmly beat a hundred rushed ones.
  • Pick a quiet moment. After a prayer, before sleep, or on a walk without your phone.
  • Use a counter if it helps. A tasbih or app can free your mind from counting. See Can I use a digital tasbih or dhikr app?

Allah is with you when you remember Him

In a hadith qudsi, Allah says: "I am as My servant thinks of Me, and I am with him when he remembers Me" (Sahih al-Bukhari 7405). Your imperfect dhikr is still you turning to Him, and He responds with closeness. Be patient with yourself, especially as a new Muslim. See What is dhikr and how do I start?

Key points
  • Dhikr said with a wandering mind is still counted and rewarded.
  • Passing thoughts are not sins as long as you don't act on them.
  • Dhikr with tongue and heart together is the higher level to aim for.
  • Don't quit dhikr because of distraction; keep returning your focus.
Tip: Before you start, take one slow breath and pick a single phrase. Each time you notice your mind drifting, smile, and say the next one a little slower.
