Does my hijab have to cover my chest?

Yes. The Quran specifically tells women to draw their head covers over their chests. A scarf tied tightly around the neck with the chest outlined isn't complete hijab. A longer scarf, or a loose top or cardigan that covers the chest area, solves it easily.

The verse

وَلْيَضْرِبْنَ بِخُمُرِهِنَّ عَلَىٰ جُيُوبِهِنَّ "...and to wrap [a portion of] their headcovers over their chests." Quran 24:31

The word for head cover here is khimar. Scholars explain that before Islam, some women wore head covers tied behind the neck, leaving the neck and chest open. The verse told them to let the cover come down over the front instead.

How the first women did it

Aisha said that when this verse was revealed, the early emigrant women tore their wraps and covered themselves with them (Sahih al-Bukhari 4758). They understood the instruction literally: cover down over the chest, right away, with whatever they had.

Practical ways to cover it

  • Longer scarves: rectangular scarves of about 180 cm or large squares let you drape the front.
  • Pinning: pin the scarf at the shoulder so the front falls loosely over the chest.
  • Khimar style: slip-on khimars that cover to the waist are very easy for beginners.
  • Layering: a loose cardigan, kimono or long open shirt over your top.

Scarf or top: which one?

The goal is that the chest area is covered and its shape isn't outlined. Many scholars say the scarf itself should come down over the chest, following the wording of the verse. Others accept a short scarf if the clothing over the chest is loose and covers well. If you can, follow the first view; it's closer to the text and easy to do. Key points
  • The Quran says to draw the head cover over the chest.
  • The first Muslim women did it immediately.
  • Longer scarves or slip-on khimars make it easy.
  • Loose layers help keep the shape covered.
Tip: When buying scarves, choose sizes around 70 x 180 cm. Short scarves are what usually leave the chest exposed.
