Does the Quran mention dinosaurs?

No, the Quran doesn't mention dinosaurs by name. It speaks about Allah creating every kind of living creature, without listing them all. Nothing in the Quran contradicts the fossil record, so Muslims can accept that dinosaurs lived and died out long before humans.
The Quran isn't an animal encyclopedia
The Quran names only a handful of animals, such as the camel, cow, horse, bee, ant, spider, elephant and the whale that swallowed Jonah. They usually appear because they're part of a story or a lesson, not to make a complete list. Dinosaurs, along with kangaroos, penguins and countless other species, simply aren't named. That's not a gap; the Quran describes itself as guidance, not a biology textbook.
What it does say about creatures
The Quran talks about all living things in broad terms, and these verses easily include dinosaurs:
The verse goes on: "Allah creates what He wills." Another verse says every creature on earth and every bird flying with its wings are "communities like you" (6:38). Some walked on two legs, some on four, some were the size of a chicken and some the size of a house; all of them were Allah's creation.
Dinosaurs and Islamic belief
- Fossils are real evidence. Islam doesn't ask you to deny bones in a museum. Studying creation is encouraged.
- No date for the age of the earth. The Quran says the heavens and earth were created in six "days" (7:54), and scholars say these are periods, not 24-hour days. So there's no conflict with an earth billions of years old.
- Humans came later. Dinosaurs died out around 66 million years ago. The Quran's account of Adam doesn't claim humans lived beside them.
- Evolution is a separate question. Scholars differ on how to fit evolution with the creation of Adam. See Can I believe in evolution as a Muslim?
Why some people ask
Some people expect a religious book to mention dinosaurs if it's true, or worry that dinosaurs disprove religion. Muslims see it differently: Allah created far more than we will ever know, including whole worlds we can't see. The same openness applies to questions like life on other planets. See Do Muslims believe in aliens?
- The Quran doesn't name dinosaurs or most other animals.
- It says Allah created every creature, on two legs or four (24:45).
- Islam doesn't deny fossils or a very old earth.
- Dinosaurs lived long before Adam; the Quran doesn't say otherwise.
